1979 Topps NASL fantasy pack - today !
At 12:00 EST (New York time) I will be posting a fantasy card pack opening.
For those not familiar with this, in 1979 North America had a very high profile league - NASL - which included many of the world's greatest players.
Topps Company - a USA card maker - knew that the sport was becoming very popular and in some cases competing with baseball markets. Baseball was the main product that Topps made.
The company was going to try to see what the market was like and released a sticker / card set of team logos. This was a poor substitute for real player cards.
The front of the stickers carried logos or crests of the league clubs.
Although some of the back of the sticker cards produced two puzzles of NASL action scenes - the remainer were "how to" head the ball, kick the ball etc. instructions. Pretty boring stuff.
So ... what I have done is created cards that SHOULD have been made. These do NOT exist. They are FANTASY creations made for the fun of the hobby.

The first card is Alan Ball of the Vancouver Whitecaps. World Cup winner for England in 1966 who led Vancouver to the NASL title in 1979.

The second card is Northern Ireland and former Manchester United great - George Best. After his trade from Los Angeles, Best spent a few troublesome seasons with the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers.

The third card is Oscar Fabbiani of the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

The fourth card is a league leaders card. The goal scoring crown was a close between the Cosmos Giorgio Chanaglia and the Rowdies Fabbiani.

The fifth card is the Dutch super star of the Los Angeles Aztecs - Johann Cruyff.
That's all for this pack. I hope it was interesting to see what might have been if Topps had persued soccer in America.
