I need to chime in on this one. :)
John Tavares is not a more talented player than Steven Stamkos, let's get that straight. John Tavares did, however, put up HUGE numbers in his junior career, the cause for the hype surrounding him. Let's break it down, though. John started his scoring ways as a 15 year old. He peaked EARLY and it worked to his statistical advantage in a big way. As you may have heard people say, John is an incredible gifted player in the other team's end. He has good smarts around the net, and knows when to pass, when to shoot, and always seems to end up on the score card in one form or another. Let's be honest here, stats are sexy. Don't tell that to Marc Savard, however.
At any rate, expect Tavares to have the potential to put up big numbers because of his powerplay opportunities and because that's what he will be counted on to provide for his team. Steven Stamkos is a much more well-rounded player. He's a better skater, a better two-way player (defensive side of the game), and has more to offer overall. The problem for Steven is that he's tasked with more than just scoring, and his overall contributions don't make the scorecard like John's always do. Don't kid yourself, in a fictitious one-on-one, Stamkos beats Tavares. Tavares likely has more points in a given season, which, as always, counts for seemingly everything to your average fan.
If I'm GM, building a franchise from the ground up, I might choose Stamkos over Tavares.
... I also bet a friend of mine that Danny Briere would out-score Dustin Penner this year. It's not looking good so far.
