PLAYER NOTES
(available at CBSSports.com)
--G Jonathan Quick bounced back from his worst start of the season with one of his best as he stopped 28 of 29 shots. Quick got the start one night after he allowed three goals on 14 shots and was pulled in the middle of the second period of a 7-0 loss to Atlanta. Quick allowed a third-period goal but stopped all three Lightning attempts in the shootout.
--LW Teddy Purcell, made a healthy scratch for the first time this season Friday night, returned to the lineup as the fourth-line right wing, and briefly saw some action Saturday night on the second line. Purcell did not record a point but did have two shots on goal in 8 minutes, 38 seconds of ice time.
--C Anze Kopitar maintained his lead in the NHL's scoring race. Kopitar had the first assist on D Drew Doughty's third-period power-play goal, giving Kopitar 31 points in 21 games this season. Kopitar, who -- like the rest of the Kings -- was held scoreless in a 7-0 loss to Atlanta on Friday, has recorded at least one point in 17 of the Kings' 21 games this season.
--G Tomas Vokoun made 40 saves (not including four in the shootout) in Thursday's 1-0 win over Boston. His shutout streak came to a quick close Saturday as the Islanders scored 16 seconds into the game.
--LW Cory Stillman has four goals in the last six games, his goal putting the Panthers on the board in the second period Saturday. Stillman's streak doesn't include Thursday's game-winner against the Bruins because it came in a shootout.
--C Stephen Weiss' goal on Saturday was his first in the last five games. Weiss also assisted on Florida's fourth goal of the night.
--RW Rostislav Olesz scored with 26.1 seconds left in the second period Saturday. It was his fourth goal of the season and first in six games. Olesz matched last season's total for goals.
--RW Michael Frolik was in a bit of a slump, but the second-year player scored his second goal in the last three games on Saturday and has four for the season. He didn't get his first of the 2008-09 season until Nov. 20.
--RW Nathan Horton improved to 4-for-10 in shootouts in his career as he netted the game-winner Saturday against the Islanders.
--C Steven Reinprecht is 3-for-6 lifetime in shootouts after scoring on Florida's second attempt Saturday.
SIDE NOTES/QUOTES
"Everybody was just competing a lot harder. We were winning loose-puck battles and everybody played for each other. Last night we got a couple goals down and everybody tried to do it themselves. We all know that's not going to work in this league. Tonight it was a long hockey game with no score, and we just stuck to it, stuck to our system and ended up winning the game, which is great." -- Kings center Anze Kopitar, on his team's turnaround one night after a 7-0 loss to Atlanta.
"You fix one problem and another crops up. We're good in shootouts now, unlike last year. Last year we held leads. This year we can't. It's like sticking your finger in the dike. You fill one (leak) and another pops up. That's an NHL season. You want to fix the problem areas as quick as you can." -- Coach Pete DeBoer, whose team is 4-1 in shootouts this season after going 3-8 last season.
