Varlamov
Alright so last night I was watching versus and they changed the spelling of Varlamov's first name twice last night (Semyon, Simeon). Last year in the playoffs they spelled it Semeon. And on Victory Bases this year they have it spelled Semen. I was just wondering what is the correct spelling of his first name?
(Just now realized I put this in the wrong section)Last edited by SutterRodney; 11-18-2009 at 03:10 PM.

He changed it this offseason to Simeon as far as I know. Probably because he didn't want to be known as Semen :)
Google it and you should be able to find the interview where he discusses it. (varlamov + spelling)

All of the above are accurate translations. The Russian alphabet is based off a different origin than English, so it can be an adventure translating some names. For a while it was Evgeny Malkin.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

He changed it again to Semyon in order to better match the Russian pronunciation. All the Russians have to decide how they want their names to be spelled in our Greek alphabet.

Imagine the poor guy having to introduce himself to prospective girlfriend's parents. "Hi, I'm Semen."
"Hi, Semen, you won't be taking Katie out tonight after all..."
