thanks for some very good advise. I don't actually have
a Mortgage anymore. Any cash will be University Tuition Money
for my daughter or College money for my son.
I guess "worthless paper" was harsh. These cards have
caused nothing but grief between my dad and his brother.
They never spoke after grampa willed them to my dad.
And they are both long dead now.
Now they cost me my relationship with my brother
as he is still mad I got the cards. I tried to give them
back to mom after dad died to sell but she told me "those were your dads
wishes, do what ever you please with them". I will
muck around for a few months with them. Does grading
on a card worth say 1ooo US cost a lot? I really don't
have a clue. All I know is the American offered me 3k
for a set of willards that is missing about 6 cards of 56(or was it 54?).
I had an offer of 25oo just for the Ty Cobb? I seen why having
them graded makes such a difference in selling price...I
guess that is the way to start! I must be doing something wrong
as this kind of hobby ott not be so stressful

Looking forward to more advise, I have hundreds of these things.
Plus a whole bunch of boxing cards too. Then there is all the
movie star cards, one set is complete, 96 cards from Willards
chocolates in superb condition. These too are from the 1920's.
I think all of these are pre 1925?

thanks again. I looked thru that list but nothing turned up.
I did find this wikopedia info tho. I'll keep doing my homework.
The American guy said something about Memorial Cup
and Hedley Smith. Something about the only time a team
produced 4 hall of famers from one team. Have a great weekend,
I'll try and check in but it's my 27th anny so I'd better pay
some attention to my wife Sally

I found a couple of references to the players but none to the cards. They are not on Beckett. They are probably local issues. They are definitely from the 1920s-30s.

Alvin Buck Moore played in the London area from 27-31. The only data I found for Hedley Smith was that he played goal for the memorial cup in 1924.

Hedley Smith:Goaltender for the Owen Sound Greys. Memorial cup winners 1924

There is an entry for Moore but not for Smith in the online hockey database.

It would probably be a lot easier to figure out the baseball cards since there is much more information out there.

To answer another of your questions, it costs around $40 per card to have them graded. Not to mention that it would take a heck of a long time to ship them back to you. (They also authenticate) A couple services to use are BGS or PSA. Grading raises the value of cards, most of the time, buy a whole bunch.

I'm going to assume you don't have a hockey beckett price guide handy. So, as an example, I'm going to use Gretzky's 79-80 OPC Rookie Card. In mint condition ungraded the card goes for $800.00 and if it has some rounded corners, creases, and/or discoloration it will go for around $500.00. The same card graded will go for a heck of a lot more (eBay Buy it Now). So in the long run, you could be shooting yourself in the foot by not getting it/them graded. Here's another Gretzky rookie.

    Happy Anniversary.

^^^^^^ i personally for vintage would go with PSA they seem to take into account how old the cards are, but that is my opinion.
