I don't like the card shops around my area, because all the owners suck. They overcharge on their stuff, the service is lousy, they have no trading nights, and they try and sell the stuff from National trading card day, or they give it to you if you buy like 50 bucks worth of stuff. Also, several of the shops feel their own packs. If the shops around me went out of business, I wouldn't feel too bad at all for them. However, I do like retail. I once got a Griffey autograph from a $1 pack at target.

Hobby is still the way to go though, I probably spend more on retail but the best pulls I've ever had is a Chrome McGrady RC ($50) or 01 Bowman Gold Pujols RC ($50) (not counting a black refractor of Penny Hardaway #'d to 50 I inexplicably got $95 for on eBay a year ago).

I've got probably 10 equal or better cards from hobby pulls.

I LOVE retail. My fav. by far is target, they have great stuff (for being retail) plus their store seems a lil more well-kept than walmart or K-mart. I really havn't bought stuff from K-mart b/c i rarely go there, but from the stuff i hear you all say about it, i should try some of the $10-$20 boxes. walmart is the pack-feeler capitol of the world...the only way i buy a pack from walmart is if it was JUST opened and all the packs are still there....(otherwise i just buy a box) but the 2 walmarts around me dont have any mix-boxes with a variety of packs, they all just have the same packs which i dont really like when it comes to retail.

Unless you're from the Great Lakes region, you won't know what I'm talking about but the best retail store is by far Meijer's (found mostly in MI, IN, and IL). A lot of times they have two different card sections, in toys and up front. Plus they're all 24 hours :) Also Shopko (found in WI, MN, IA, IL) has some pretty nice stuff on occasion, but a lot of times their pack prices are marked up 10% higher than everywhere else.

For me it all boils down to Quantity over Quality. And thats really a no brainer for me because i love to just open packs :). But i do make it a point to go to the Card Shop at least once a month. Retail is so much more convenient as well.

Shopko and Meyer are very nice. If you like them, then you would probably like Target's selection. Other collector's have told me the Donruss Classic in the Pak Attacks at Target have been good for them.

Now, Target is offering the higher-end/hobby level products. That is helpful to areas of the world that don't have hobby shops or lower quality ones.

omg, i forgot about shopco (OR) they have the LARGEST card selection i have EVER seen in a retail store...they have like 2 ailes dedicated to JUST cards. its great...plus they always have cards on clearance so u can get them REALLY cheap. even though they dont have shopcos around here (NC) when i make a trip back to OR (where im originally from) i plan on makin a special trip just to shopCo.

    ShopCo > Target > K-mart > Fred Meyers > Wal-Mart

I assume you meant ShopKo, but I'm not sure what a Fred Meyers is (something in OR or NC?) Mejiers are only around Michigan, and a few in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. They're basically a 24 hour Super WalMart with lots of cards, and they are much better than K-Mart or even Target. ShopKo always prices $3 packs at $3.29 so they kinda suck around here unless they have a sale.
