I could really use some help. Regarding: Ebay, Paypal, and shipping to Canada.

I could really use some help. I'm extremely frustrated right now, so I apologize for any ranting.


Okay so first of all since when does Paypal put a hold on Ebay auction payments? I'm shocked to find that I can't withdrawal the money. I sold a Tavares YG for $86.00 + $5.01 for First Class Mail International to Canada.
But I need the money to ship the cards out. Okay so I'll print out a Paypal Shipping label, fine. Oh but Paypal doesn't offer First Class Mail International? So now I have to pay $6.00 out of my $86.00 to make $11.00 for Priority Mail International Shipping?

And what does this mean?

Note: To ship using Medium Flat Rate Box or Flat Rate Envelope, you must use USPS®-provided flat rate packaging.

Do I have to buy that package too? Is it a bubble wrapped packet like I have and was planning on using to ship? Is that even safe to ship a card inside a toploader in?

And also Paypal charged me a $3.85 Canadian-$USD fee. Why in the world don't they charge the Buyer for that? Thats $10.00 total out of my $86.00 right there, not including packaging materials.
Now what gets me the most isn't that I'm probably going to take a $10.00 hit, only to hope that this guy follows up with positive feedback so Paypal will release the money. And I've read all sorts of stories about them holding the money for given amounts of time. Who knows how long the shipping will take to get to the guy.

"The money for this payment is being temporarily held in your pending balance. It will be held for up to 21 days. While it's being held, it won't be available for withdrawal.

I'm depending on that money. Had I known Paypal did this I wouldn't have shipped to Canada. Ultimately this is all my fault. But the fact is I've been using Ebay and Paypal since 2000. They change their rules and I find myself in a bind, and smoking from the ears. I also sold a Victor Hedman card to someone from Canada. So I'm expecting the same currency exchange fee and an extra $6.00 to ship. I'm going to be making a few dollars off that Hedman.




I'm so ticked off right now. Everything was worked out fine and now Paypal holds Ebay Payments. I'm in a position where I'm going to have to borrow money, and I just hate doing that.

Enough ranting. So what do I do? Should I ask the guy if he will pay the extra $6.00 shipping and $3.85 currency exchange? I can't see myself doing that. That's an extra $10.00 that he did not agree to. That just seems lame.
If I were to borrow some money, would shipping the card First Class International warrant delivery confirmation so Paypal will know when to release my money?

I'm considering just refunding the money, and asking them nicely not to leave negative feedback

Well I'm chilled out now. I'm probably just going to borrow some money tomorrow and ship the cards and several other trades out First Class Mail International.

I'm in Michigan and Quebec is a 12 1/2 hour drive. So I reckon the shipping wont take that long.

I just really don't want to get milked, and have to wait forever because I'm shipping to Canada. I have no problem doing the trades. But these Paypal currency fees, and Payment holds really deter me from going through with this.

Any tips would be helpful,

Flat Rate Shipping is either the Envelopes or the special boxes (that I think come in two sizes) You can get these at local post offices for free.

That is the only way to ship via paypal internationally.

I would try to borrow a few bucks, or offer to do some work for someone to get the funds you need. Be open with the buyer too, they might understand your situation and work with you.

Good luck...for now we are at the mercy of PayPal...but Google and others are trying to catch up quick. So it might not be long.

You can go to the PO and ship first class mail with DC. Make sure you keep that tracking number so you can email paypal with it so they have proof you sent it. You can then email the buyer to please leave feedback once he gets the item so paypal can release your money asap. As far as the currency exchange fee goes your stuck with it.

Thanks for the info. I've contacted the buyer and I'm going to ship it first class international tomorrow. He claims he will leave prompt feedback. I still have to contact the Hedman YG buyer. If I don't get a response from them I wont ship it. I've also sold a Computer Joystick to a guy in the states for $50. That payment is also being held and what do you know I've been charged 2$ by Paypal. On top of an Ebay sellers fee.

I'm done selling on Ebay unless I have to, and I'm not offering shipping to Canada. I'm not keen on being charged a currency fee that the Buyer should be charged with in the first place. I'll still do trades to Canada here on SCF.

$4 currency exchange plus $8 Ebay sellers fee. This brings my total down to $74.00. And the buyer gets the item before I get my money. That's a bunch of BS. I can see Buyers pulling all sorts of shady tricks to rip sellers off with that type of system. They're not huge fees but it all adds up. And I refuse to accept that as an acceptable fee to use their systems.

I will buy on Ebay because the buyer isn't penalized. But I will not sell on that site ever again. Ebay and Paypal are a bunch of Nazi's.

I'm actually considering asking all 3 buyers to send me a money order after I refund their money. If they don't do that I might just back out. I'm afraid to ship out items while paypal holds the money. I don't want to be at the mercy of the buyers and paypal. I don't feel protected at all.

Once the buyer leaves feedback Paypal will release your money and if they don't you can email them and they do it right away. I'm not taking Paypal's side, but if you plan on selling on ebay in the future this will happen again. I've been a verified user of Paypal and Ebay since 2000. I've never had any issues, all positive feedback. Never any problems.

I don't feel at all protected if Paypal is holding my money and waiting for the response of the buyer. Since when do you get an item before you actually pay for it? That's not the way things work.


The last thing I want to do is back out of an Ebay auction that I listed. I'm not that kind of person. But these new rules changes things, these new fees changes things. The fact that I don't ever want to sell on Ebay again makes me careless if I receive negative feedback for backing out. I don't want to wait 21 days to get the money, I don't want to be at Paypal and the Buyers will. I'm not protected, I could get ripped off, its happened. They're protecting buyer scammers the way I see it.


It looks to me as if they place a hold on any Ebay payment. It doesn't seem to matter if you've sold that type of item or not. Where did you hear that? I'm curious. I can't even use the money the buyer paid with to print a shipping label. I have to use my own money to ship the item. Isn't that why buyers pay for shipping? So they can actually pay for the shipping? Whats going to happen if the buyer decides he doesn't want it and he leaves negative feedback? I'm going to be out the money I paid for shipping. I'm sorry but all of this BS does not make me happy. Had I known about it beforehand I wouldn't have done it. I didn't receive an email or any notification from Paypal that they have change their rules.



If I sound like I'm attacking you it wasn't intended. I'm just trying to explain the way I see it. I'm not a person that backs out of something he says he will sell or trade, that's just not cool. But this changes things, I'm really not happy about this.
