For me, I have a mini safe that I keep about 15-20 cards/autographs. I do that because I've seen things fall and crush boxes, trees fall through houses, cars go through houses...ect. Usually just my one-of-a-kind cards only.
If you have a nice collection, I would also call your insurance agent and see what (if anything) you have to do to have them covered in your policy. A small umbrella policy can usually cover anything a home-owners or renters policy doesn't.

Low-end, unnumbered base/inserts go into a binder; numbered cards, inserts that are higher valued, nice rookies and all GU, autos, patches go into penny sleeves/toploaders and into my safe....need to get a larger safe sometime soon! lol

Most are in 9 pocket pages in binders, makes looking thru them a breeze.
I have a small box of toploaders
I have two cork boards that display about 80 toploaded cards as well, mount those on the wall...only minus is can't see the backs...but that doesn't matter mostly anyway.
