Obama Shatters Spending Record for First-Year Presidents
He really is outdoing himself even spending more than FDR spent on World War II! He is even spending more than our President's spent during the Great Depression!
President Obama has shattered the budget record for first-year presidents -- spending nearly double what his predecessor did when he came into office and far exceeding the first-year tabs for any other U.S. president in history.I'm sure he will double his current record once the healthcare bill passes and is signed into law. Socialism here we come!
In fiscal 2009 the federal government spent $3.52 trillion -- $2.8 trillion in 2000 dollars, which sets a benchmark for comparison. That fiscal year covered the last three-and-a-half months of George W. Bush's term and the first eight-and-a-half months of Obama's.

just curious, if that comparison is just dollar for dollar or if it takes into account for the dollar value being much lower over the last few years as well as inflation.
I don't disagree that the government is spending a ton of cash and they need to reign it in, but comparing dollars in different eras can skew things a bit. It's sort of like every new big movie breaks a grossing record simply because it costs more to see a movie than it did in the past.
It's definitely not a good trend. Hopefully the stimulus packages that he a bush pushed through is the reason it's so high.
also, three and a half months of that was bush's budget so there's thanks to go around.

Inflation is factored in.

Let's see...you title the thread 'Obama shatters spending record' then include the last 3 1/2 months that George W. Bush was in office? Bush approved $700 billion in spending under the TARP program and the continued ungodly amount of money that Iraq and Afghanistan have cost us during this time. How about calling your thread 'Bush helps Obama shatter spending record for first-year presidents?' Is that not partisan enough for you?
Interesting that President Bush said in November of 2000 'Too much government spending will end prosperity.' How true.

Can't argue with you there. Spot on ! Obama (or anyone else for that matter) was doomed the minute he won the election. You can't fix the mess the previous idiot left this country in overnight. After 4 years this country will still be feeling the effects of the previous 8 years but it will all be on Obama. Talk about something being over before it started. Doesn't matter who or what party won, they had no chance to right the wrongs as fast as people expect. Nobody could dig out of this hole.

exactly, I voted for McCain but was realistic enough to know even if he won he wouldn't be able to turn things around during his term from the hole dug by the previous administration

So because he accounts for everything he gets a raw deal. Bush spent more then anyone in history when you figure that
Iraq War
Afgan War
Med. Drug program
Tarp
NONE of this counted against the debt because it was all off book and that's Trillions that where not counted.. It's one of the few things I believe from that wack job Beck

I guess you haven't been watching the news. Obama has broken the deficit budget three times over. You may want to start reading a bit on the spending Obama has done over the past 11 months. Or just keep on bringing up the Bush years.
I swear it will be 2020 and people will still say the problems are from President Bush. We should spend $1 trillion on therapy for Bush haters!

Nope. Not enough. Streicher and gatorboymike need that much in therapy by themselves.
Also we need to set aside some funds to help those who are still dealing with the emotional fallout of John Kerry losing to Bush.

The Bush years are relevant to this post. Obama is 'responsible' for 71% of the fiscal year quoted. Bush gets 29% of the blame...if not more.
I wonder what would be said if McCain had won and spent anywhere near the same...
