Why Trilogy?
Hey Guys and Gals,
I'm going through my stuff, throwing most of it up on The Bay (Only keeping the OPC sets and Cup RC's I want) and I came across a few Trilogy auto's and RC's. It hit me that this set year in and year out costs about $30/pack with 9 packs/box. That comes to around $250-$270 Canadian not including tax and NONE of the RC's can even cover the box! Heck, even the Crosby RC only goes for around $150 - or the price of about 5-6 packs. So my question is this; "Why Trilogy?" What is the appeal of this product? Why does ANYONE buy a pack/box/case of this stuff? Sticker auto's, crappy jersey cards and worthless RC's all for an exorbitant price. I don't get it. I feel the same to a lesser extant about UD Black Diamond as well.

thats a good question, trilogy is always hit or miss though, and if ur talking about 05-06 specifically all of the boxes are priced high, like spgu and bd like u said

I enjoy Trilogy because it yields a hit in every pack. I think I like it so much because my very first pack of Trilogy I bought produced a dual auto of Gretzky/Lemieux /25. That pack right there got me hooked on collecting. With Trilogy, you have a good chance to pull a huge hit. I've almost always made my money back on a box. Everyone's luck is different though I guess.

Trilogy does actually contain hard-signed autos in the Trilogy Scripts set. I've never seen the appeal in the product myself, but like anything, there's somebody out there that absolutely loves it.
Black Diamond is awesome. It's the only set that actually has tiers for superstar players, creating a chase to actually together the set.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Hmmm... OK, so for Black Diamond that makes sense that Set Collectors would be into it. That's why I LOVE the OPC stuff, but the Trilogy isn't just expensive for 05-06, it's expensive EVERY year. And a hit in every pack? What!? yes, there's either an RC, auto or jersey card but from what I've seen 90% of the time there of what is commonly referred to in the hobby as, "Bums and/or Hobo's". And doesn't a huge hit mean that you should at least get the price of your box back? I don't know, it just seems like Trilogy is a guaranteed waste every time. Where as something like OPC, Ultimate, SPA, UD Series I and II, and The Cup all give you more bang for your buck overall. Eh, I guess it's just personal taste, but in my opinion Trilogy is the broccoli of card collecting.

black diamond is also good, at least for 08-09, several hits for only $55 a box.
to be honest opc isn't that great value wise, sure u get a lot of inserts, rc's and all that but the highest card u get will be like $30 if that, not counting a jsy or auto hit cause those are pretty rare...but u actually have a chance at getting a nice card or two with trilogy, which is what draws collector's.

i have pretty much given up on busting, seems easier to spend the say 250 bucks you would spend on trilogy and get a few high end singles that are or were prob case hits, take my sharks quartets patch, i paid under the equivilent of 2 packs of spgu and it was prob close to the case hit unless something amazing was in it, thats another product like trilogy 40 a pack and 4 of the 6 packs have 1 coloured swatches, i dont mind busting spa or series 1 once in awhile, but i would prefer to open a case of series 1 so you are gauranteed the top yg, like this year i have bought 4 boxes and no jt, so now i would be losing money if i did bust it, so i am giving up lol, and i have bought a cpl packs of trilogy and never liked it for the exact reasons you stated. ultimate also seems to be overpriced just on the sheer fact the base rcs book for the same as about ygs 60 range for higher tier not superstar, and for 200 a pack thats expensive same with black.

I really like the autograph design for triology; however, besides some of the nicer autos, there isn't that great a payoff on the triology.

I like Trilogy and I beg to differ on the prices. Packs around here were about $16 and boxes are still only $130, and you can easily get your return in that. So much easier to get your money back in Trilogy rather than Black or even OPC

Derrick they are 25 a pack or 220 a box here so i agree with the op that its a waste at that price. I bought 5 packs of 07-08 and i got a jersey of hasek a jersey of modano and rookies of ryan carter, steve wagner and somebody else i cant remember. Thats 125 in cash and i got 37 in BV back not cash value. I will never pay that much again for that product but at 130 a box i could probably justify a box or 2
