Suspended Ovechkin says he won't 'change anything'

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -No way is Alex Ovechkin going to tone it down. If anything, his two-game suspension might motivate him to ratchet up his intensity another notch or two.

"Maybe,'' he said Wednesday, "it just gets me more angry.''

And he's got the full backing of Washington's coach and the Capitals' owner, who both say he doesn't need to change.

I agree with Ovie... he's got tremendous heart and I'd hate to see him have to go even 99% on the ice just to "be less reckless".

With him saying he won't change anything, I think it only adds fuel to the fire for others. It's only a matter of time until he gets seriously injured in retaliation of his recklessness.

I would like to see him tone it down a bit - for his own wellbeing, but he most likely will not.

To me.... this means that the next time he wants to deliver a knee-on-knee hit, he should be suspended for 20 games (or more).

The suspension will make him "more angry" (his own words). This tells me that he's out there, playing dirty and trying to hurt other players, because he's already angry. Now that he'll be "more angry" I guess we should expect more dirty play.

Keeping in mind he wasn't suspended for his dirty hit on Gonchar in last year's playoffs.... and this was the 3rd (or 4th) dirty hit he laid this year before getting suspended..... the only conclusion that his actions and words lead me to is this:

    - Ovechkin is playing dirty because he's angry (though I don't know what)
    - Getting suspended has made him more angry
    - Ovechkin intends to go out and attempt to injure other players

Premeditated dirty plays need to be hit with big suspensions. Especially when the guilty player is a repeat offender.

He may very well be the best player in the game today. I hope he smartens up and plays a CLEAN game.

Take out the instagator rule and let the players deal with him.

Well at least he fights unlike others who just turtle it. He might not be a heavy weight but he will get into the fray.

AO does not play a dirty game at all and he does not try to injure anyone either. He plays a tough game. The reason Gonchar and Gleason got the knee hits is because they tried to avoid the hit rather than take it. Both of them would have been much better off by just absorbing the hit. I say I would like him to tone it down only because when these guys try to avoid his hits, they leave something behind - whether it be their knee or a stick - and that is what makes it dangerous. Physical contact is part of the sport. Sometimes that contact comes at you like a freight train.

I see him being a Wendel Clark type player...in the way that injuries will take their toll on him and eventually shut him down for good in his early thirties.

He has to tone it down a tad...at least for own longevity.
