Is there value in breaking a set?
Question is I have a near complete set of 07-08 Ultra Gold Medallion. i am missing about 7 cards and 3 rookies. I will probably hold on to it, although I could use it for trade or sell it.
I know full sets usually sell for less than the value of the single cards added together, but what do think for a parallel set. Would it bring in more total value by selling it as a set, or breaking it up and selling the stars individually?Last edited by Drewk86a; 12-08-2009 at 06:58 AM.

It's difficult to say. I was peeking at some 07-08 Black Diamond complete sets on the Bay lately, and even though the set books for well over a thousand sellers were getting like opening bid sales at around $250. That may be a little different with a parallel set like the Ultra Gold Medallions, but it's always risky.
I broke up my 08-09 Black Diamond set for trading purposes. To no small surprise I've been able to move out nearly all of the quads and a bunch of the triple diamond RCs, and I've made some rather nice deals along the way. Sure I'm stuck with all the 1's, 2's, and 3's, but I did put up a couple full set FT/FS threads and received zero response.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...
