Last night on the Hot Stove, LeBrun or Friedman (can't remember who) said that the League is going to spend a record amount this year on officiating. So many of the "old guard" (Fraser, McCreary et. al.) are retiring after this season and the NHL/Officials Assoc. are very worried about all of the less experienced guys being able to handle the playoffs. They are going to spend over budget to make sure they get it right. I don't know if this means using less (but more experienced) officials and paying them to work overtime, or spending more on training.

Do they ever get it right anyway?
