Is Don Cherry preaching the wrong hockey message?

Don Cherry has gotten away with promoting violence in hockey for too long when he should be leading the charge to stop hits to the head, says a renowned neurosurgeon who came out swinging just a day after calling the Canadian hockey icon a "negative influence" on the game.

Over the last number of years (seemingly forever) the two biggest things I've seen Don Cherry promote:

Anti-Hits-from-behind. He's spent several 100k of his own money buying 'Stop Sign' stickers for the backs of kids helmets.

The other thing, for the NHL level, he's been preaching for the last twenty years..... is a change to the icing rule (specifically bringing in no-touch icing).

he is also in favor of getting rid of the instigating rule, so players will be held accountable by their peers for dirty play. Slew footing, leaving your feet to check a player..there are much worse things in hockey then fighting.
he also is in favor of getting rid of the kevlar equipment that makes an elbow a leathal weapon.

    fighting is not violence.
violence is a premeditated attack on a foe.
nobody ever admits to intentionaly injuring a player, but we all know it happens. just ask harry sinden and booby clarke.

The only thing that Don Cherry might promote is tough hockey and a good fight. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but fighting is not allowed in minor hockey, and kids play with full face cages. Don Cherry constantly promotes respect in the game, and constantly calls out checks from behind, knee on knee collisions and all around dirty play. How is that sending the wrong message to kids?

Instead of calling out Don Cherry, why not call out the players who are recklessly throwing their bodies, elbows, and knees around in a deliberate attempt to injure. Kids are not immitating Don Cherry on the ice, they are immitating the the big devastating hits that their favorite players are dishing out.
