83-86 Star Company thread
Hey guys, I just started to get back into collecting the 83-86 Star Co. cards. I used to have a fair sized collection back in the '90s, but sold them when I got out of collecting for a while. There were counterfeit scares going on, and it kinda soured the experience for me.
I'm just curious who also collects Star Co. here, and what the current market is like. I had talked to Steve Taft back in the day about the cards, and I learned a lot about their history up to that point. I've picked up a few sealed bags recently, and might try to complete the 5x7 sets first, because I still have a couple of them. Are there any new counterfeit issues now? I see that many companies are grading and authenticating them, which is nice. Please share all of your Star Company thoughts and info with me! These are a lot of fun to collect.

I love Star Co. basketball too. I have a few team sets from '84 & '86 (including Ewing), and maybe half of the teams from '85 (including Jordan & Olajuwon). One of these days, I want to complete the '85 set.
I also talked to Steve Taft a while back when "unreleased" white border & black border Jordan RCs were hitting ebay. Of course, they were fake.
I've also seen an "unreleased" '85 Barkley from the Gatorade slam dunk set. Not sure if that's real either.
I've noticed you can get commons & common team sets real cheap now.

I've been collecting those for almost 20 years. Today I have 1133 of the 1391 different Star cards listed in Beckett, which is about 81.5% of the total. I also have 65 sets in sealed bags out of 115 total. I hope to own them all some day, though I don't know how I'll ever afford some of the Jordans.

Has anyone ever put together a good list or breakdown of the counterfeits that are out there? I have a 1984 Dr. J set that i just got, loose, and it seems like the card stock is a little different and there isn't the usual bleed-through on the back edges. The priniting is clear, though. Something about it just seems off......
I just picked up about 12 other sealed bags, though. Some from Kruk Cards (Schick Legends, Kareem set, 83 Rockets) and the others from another person (Sixers Champs, Coaches set, both Lifebuoy sets, and some 85/86 teams).

Yeah, let me know what you have.
Well, I opened up the bags I have, and put them right into a binder to display. A few interesting things I noticed-
The 1985 Coaches set-the top and bottom cards (Pat Riley and Lenny Wilkens) have purple lettering on the back, while the rest have blue.
The Lifebuoy Nets set has the checklist card on top, but it is actually the last card (#14) in the set.
The 85-86 Pistons set has Bill Laimbeer as the front card, but he's like the 3rd-4th card in the numbered order. Also, Isiah Thomas' card is missing the Pistons logo on front, and mine had 2 creases in it! No other cards were damaged at all. Very strange for a sealed bag, and a bummer as he's the best card in the set.
