Let's Make a Deal: Kovalchuk for Phaneuf Is a Real Possibility

    by Daniel Sallows

Written on January 04, 2010 If the rumors that keep swirling out of Calgary are indeed true, and Dion Phaneuf has requested a trade, don't be surprised if Ilya Kovalchuk is on the Flames radar.

It is common knowledge that Kovalchuk is quickly becoming a well sought after commodity as his pending free agent status looms over the head of Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell as the NHL trade deadline draws near.

That right there sums it up.

Never gonna happen because it would take 2 players of Phaneuf's caliber and a solid grouping of picks and prospects to land Kovy. He is that good.

In the salary cap era of the NHL, can any team afford 3 big time defensemen? It may just be a matter of time before 1 of the 3 gets moved to bring some offense to Calgary.

Also, Sutter rolled the dice with the Bowmeister trade, and it worked out for Calgary. Can he do the same thing with Kovy, and be able to sign him to compliment Jerome?

I want the Kings to trade Froloaf, Purcell, Martinez, Teubert, and a 2nd+maybe a 3rd? for Kovy. No way we give up our 1st round pick when the draft is in our town for the first time ever

i would have to give up my whole collection if kovy went to the flames lol, but i don't see it happening cause he said he wants to stay in atl. now him going to the rangers would be sweet, but couldn't happen unless we get rid of redden and rozsival first

If kovalchuk goes anywhere it will be as a rent a player. I have read he wants to stay in a small hockey market.

Not buying this theory/rumor either. You know why?

Don Waddell called and Kovy screened his call and let it go to voicemail.

Money called and Kovy picked up halfway through the first ring.

The Thrashers would be stupid to make that deal. Kovalchuk is worth wayyyyyyyy more than Phaneuf.
