    Angry Prices !?!

Being in school and having a chore income it pains me to try to get back into the hobby of collecting. Prices everywhere are blown up! I have to save for 3 or 4 months to get a middle end product and I need to rip more!

I've never bought any extremeley high end products(OPC Premier once)and I find it hard to find a good product at a good price. The Cup, Ultimate, SP GU, etc. are all to expensive. I am way past getting Series 1, Series 2, or OPC. Right now I'm in limbow! I've invested into two boxes of SPA(two patches yess)but it seems that, for now, SPA is my ceiling. Maybe single packs of SPGU but..argh

My question is..why are hockey products so damn expensive?!

It amazes me when people buy and break multiple cases of the The Cup! Anyway any help appreciated..thanks!

People that are buying multiple cases of The Cup are in much different situations than you and I. They have the financial wherewithal to purchase multiple cases of the Cup where at this point, you don't have that.

20 years ago when I was spending my allowance on cards, it was Topps, OPC and Pro Set. Upper Deck had 1 product and the "high end" was $30-$40 a box (which was killing me and my allowance). Today, it's not the run of the mill base sets, you have sets, upon sets, upon autos, upon Game Used cards. All of the extra's (jerseys, gloves, skates, autos) cost the companies a ton of money, in which that cost is past along to us, the consumers.

If you look, Victory, OPC is no more expensive today than it was 20 years ago, albeit, less cards in the pack.

    Hope this helps

i agree with the boxes getting out of control. but if i were you and wanted to get back into collecting, i would skip the boxes and go for the singles. with so many patches and autos out these days, u can pick up some very nice pieces for very little, as opposed to getting a box and trying to hit something nice.

i look at it this way: u can get a box of SP Authentic for what, $95 probably? depends on what year i guess, but i think thats what this year is around....and u can pull 3 autos that consist of Kyle Clifford, Cody Almond and Bobby Sanguinetti.....OR u can pick up so much more in singles. $95 could get u a Crosby auto...or a nice patch auto of someone u want to collect (depends on who).

just my opinion....thinking about the possible junk i could pull drives me away from getting any boxes over $75.

I realize that, it stills amazing though.

i think you're doing ok if you can afford a box of spa on occasion. you can actually get some very nice things in that product (if you are lucky). i think singles are a great way to go, but i'd say mix in some sealed boxes once in a while so you can get the chance at a big hit. of course the chances are slim, but like we all know, it's plain fun to open up sealed product.

as for stuff like the cup... well, i have a job and i have to really save to get some of it... but man... it is fun to open!

    Boooo!

Breaking boxes is one of the great joys in life. I totally understand your qualms, OP. I can't splurge on tons of Cup either. My solution is to go for older stuff, that has priced down a bit. Some of my funnest breaks were 05-06 series 2 UD for $40 a box. Find the new discount decent break, go for that. 08-09 HnP seems to be that right now.

Prices for specific products have been set for years and you'll not see very many changes. For the most part in Canada the past 5 years or so, prices have been on the decline, but a lot of that is attributable to the Canadian dollar. Its all about supply and demand and while people demand the Cup and are willing to pay 400 a tin, then that's how it will work.

there is always pro set to break. you can get those for pennies. but it is a different card market now with so many sets out every year. but since your a school student, you can always look for a part time job to supplement some income for you to rip some mid end wax. MCDONALDS IS ALWAYS HIRING!
