Funny ? .. Sad ?? .. or booth lets hear it

I thought it would be a cool Idea to start a thread where everyone would share their funniest story about hockey cards whether it was with a friend , fellow collector, website or card company , or also a short story about something we consider sad in the hobby. I will be the first to start with this one :

I pulled a redemption for an auto card of a hall of famer once and at the time it was my biggest pull of the year and one of my best pulls of all time and did not hesitate for a second with the the decision of selling or redeeming it so I redeemed it and after waiting for over 10 months for the card I decided to give the card company a call to see if i could get an update on the status of the card , the customer service rep could not give me an answer so he transferred me to his supervisor , and the second did not want to take any part of the responsibility of giving an answer that might not be correct so he transferred me to the product manager , now I am talking to one of the managers in one of the biggest sports card company's in the world if not the biggest and after explaining to him the situation and how long I have been waiting for this item he started his answer by giving me a very professional apology and he said that they were having a problem with the athlete but he has committed to sign and he assured me jokingly that he would personally fly and make sure that he sign's the cards needed to be signed and i would be one of the first people to get my card , now you ask where is the funny or sad thing in this story , and here it is , the autographed card was a cut signature of Maurice Richard

My story is just sad, but it has nothing to do with cards and more to do with a player.

I happened to be at the Sabres practise one day and I was still outside when they came out to get on the team bus. My nefew is a huge goalie fan, no one specific, just goalies. Having nothing for a goalie to sign another collector offered me an 8x10 of Steve Shields for $5. I bought the photo and caught up to Steve on the side (no line up for his auto as you can imagine).

I asked him for his autograph and he seemed quite put out by it even though I was only the 2nd he signed. Right after he signed the pic and handed it back to me he says "Be sure to go sell that on ebay now and make some money off of me".
Shocked I asked him to repeat what he said because I wasn't sure if he was joking.... He wasn't.
I told him it was for my nefew and he replied "Yeah, sure it is".
As you can imagine, this pissed me off right away. I then "explained" to Steve that the $5 I just paid for his picture was more than his signed 8x10 was worth. He just smiled at me so I offered the signed pic to anyone in the crowd.... when no one said they would take it, I tore it in half and trew it in the trash within 10 feet of us.
He just turned and got on the bus, and I went home.

Sad that players get to be like that, but the real sad thing is that this type of thing has happened with many players that I've witnessed.

    Wow
Some players just do not get it

I'll remember not to buy anything of Steve shields

You can tell whos cool and who's not within the blink of an eye
At jets practice you could tell Kane, mason and a bunch signing many autographs
Burmistrov asking if anyone else wanted one(like 2000 people) and apologizing when he had to leave

Players like conroy, Is what we need more of

These players like doughty can just go and quit hockey
(doughty because he's whining and complaining about being paid 7k a year TO PLAY HOCKEY
Meanwhile Johnny works 9hours daily of hard work construction and gets paid 10$ hour

The first story is pretty funny but the Shields story is a both funny and sad. lol at Steve Shields being dumb enough to think anybody can make money off his autograph. I guess ignorance is bliss. Between the $5 you spent on the pic and shipping costs you would most likely still not break even on that investment if you were to auction it off on the bay. Sorry about your luck, you must have been pretty cheesed.

well while we are there here is another story that it is funny in a genius way ,

me and my friend from work went to toronto to attend the leafs and red wings game and we had great seats , platinum to be exact that we paid arround $300 each at the time and while these seats come with an access to the entrance where the players come in and out of the ice, we made sure that we used that option. and in the end of the game that ended unfortunatley in Detroit winning 4-1 we again went down there to see the players for the last time and there was a young lady attending to a young man arround 17 or 18 years of age wearing a wings jersey in a wheel chair that had a thick oxygen mask on his face and barley was able to lift his hands to clap for the red wings players as they came of the ice and when yzerman at the time saw him he stopped and talked to him and thanked him personally along with a couple of other players , the young lady started to tell the young man's who she said he was her brother story and how doctors said that he could sleep and not wake up on any given day and therefore his wishes were to attend as much hockey games as he could of his favorite teams , now after that story the young man ended up with yezerman's game used jersey and stick , Drapers stick and federov's stick and they all signed them , I at the time thought it was great of the players to do that and felt so bad for the young man that i was almost in tears thinking that all these nice stuff and he might not live long enough to enjoy them . after the players all went to the dressing room we left the arena and went clubbing in down town Toronto all night and then off to sleep to our hotel , when I woke up the next mornning and came down to the restaurant to have my breakfast there i saw that same young lady sitting on the table next to me and a second before i asked her how her brother was doing i saw a young man coming toward the table walking like a champ carrying couple glasses of orange juice he gave the young lady a kiss on the lips and sat down , and guess what it was the same young man that was on the wheel chair the night before , and after my jaw dropped on the table i could not hold my self but to ask why did they do it after i told them that i know what they did , he answered , buddy do you have any idea what these game used stuff sell for , believe it or not they invited me to their table and told me that they have been doing this for a long time and they made allot of money doing it then i learned the best item they ever got was team USA's goalie from salt lake city Olympics who gave his mask to him after one of the games and they ended up selling it for almost $20.000 to a collector in new york .

I never told him about that meeting. I didn't really want to wreck his view of NHL'rers because of one guy that would only be in the league for a few years.

Besides, he would likely ask me why I got Shields to sign when Hasek was playing there too

but you gotta give it to them it takes a genius to think of something like that then make it happen and convince everyone around you , i am telling you I felt so bad for the guy i almost took my clothes off and gave it to him because the way he was acting was 100% believable .
