When you really look at the reasons why the post office is struggling, it is mostly us that is hurting them. I stopped getting bank statements and credit card statements because they asked me to stop getting them in the mail, but in the process, it is saving trees. I also use PayPal shipping instead of going to the post office, but that is my own doing.
They can gladly get rid of Saturday mail, but I also heard that they are eliminating same day delivery and overnight deliveries also.

Next Day/Overnight and 2-3 Day Delivery is a joke with them anyway. I sent a package Overnight. They delivered it 4 days later.
If I need something delivered fast I use FedEx.

ding ding. it seems that this is the largest drain. I'm also surprised that it's taken them so long to do something to adjust. I thought they were going to do away with saturday delivery over a year ago. It's said that taking that away would save them a lot of money.

fed ex is a subcontractor for their international shipments. I thin the FedEx logo is even on the flat rate boxes now.

I wouldn't mind seeing more cooperation between fedex/ups/the usps. For example I have a locked mail box and I hate the fact that I can't get fed ex or ups packages in my mail box. I have to either rearrange my schedule to recieve a package at home or go all the way across town to the depot to pick up my packages.

I don't think the small letters is what's hurting them. I've said this before, I spend a few thousand dollars at the USPS every year shipping goods that I sell online.
People may stop corresponding via a letter of a credit app, but where they cut out those single stamped items, they are spending that much more shipping and having items they purchase online shipped to them. From UPS and Fedex are viable companies that make money shipping items. The USPS should be able to do it as well. Everything that I read about their loses seems to go back to their retirement and health benefit payouts sucking them dry. I'm sure there are a lot of inefficiencies as well, but they should be able to break even if not turn a profit.

they are pricing themselves out as well. i know thats not the main reason they are losing money but i look at it like the airlines. travel is down so rather then lower prices to attract more customers they jack up prices and charge for every single thing. everytime the post office raises their rates i hear and see more and more traders cutting back because they cant afford to ship a 2-3 dollar package 50-100 times a month. it never ceases to amaze me how little common sense the people in charge of billion dollar industries can have.
