I think the term 'firesale' has been appropriate by all sales that want views. Its like the flyers that get mailed to your house. Its annoying, and the actual sale rate is very low, but if having that word means more views and views translate into sales, it will end up there.

As long as people still visit threads that say "firesale", its going to be used more and more.

AMEN, the board has become a haven for those flipping ebay cards, and don't get me started on the bump my own thread 20 times so it stays on top of all other sellers.

If you mean 20 times without respecting the 8 hour window for bumping that is allowed on SCF, then please report the post and a mod will handle it.

some sites won't even allow a "cmb" you have to show the cards or a list with scans available..

The (relatively) new high end trading forum does not allow 'CMB' posts and requires that users post all card details, like year, set, player name a photo and value of the cards they have for trade and everything (except a photo) of the cards they want too. It was created because of people's comments like this. If you really feel strongly about it, I suggest you check out that forum.

    Cheers,
    reoddai

The word "Sale" in today's market, has a subjective meaning of a deep, or relatively positive proportional discount to valued MSRP or cost.

Nothing could be further from the truth. When business is transacted and a commodity is purchased, the transaction itself is sell a "Sale".

Now looking at the words..... "Fire Sale". The original concept behind this ploy was to reduce invertory that had or has "Smoke Damage" due to a fire at the place of business, or inventory that may or may not have had an impact from a business Fire.

To suggest that because a person labels their thread "Fire Sale" that you are actually going to get some kind of a discount, is folly at best.

    maybe its just me..
but i think it would be nice if a seller is advertising a "FireSale"
why not put the current BV beside the picture/writeup and then the selling price.
or perhaps the BV and then a discounted selling percentage .. ie 80% off.
we generally all have a realistic value for most cards.
nobody wants to insult someone with a lowball offer, (both sides) but a firesales denotes low pricing.

I agree (not about a specific price, but generally about listing your prices.... be that as a funciton of BV, like the 80% off you suggested, or simply writing down your asking price).

Personally, I do not like to haggel. Ask a fair price for your card, and if I want it - I will usually pay the price you're asking, if I think it sounds right. I may ask for a bit of a discount when buying multiples, but that's about it.

I hate making offers - for exactly the reason you said. I do not want to insult anyone.... and my perception of the value of a card vs theirs may be WAY off. The only time I really go the route of making offers is when I'm REALLY interested in something (i.e. you've pulled a card that I feel I must have, rather than one I would like to have).

    maybe its just me..

no prices flat piss me off!!!! if your gonna sell it then have a price, everywhere we go walmart, car parts, hell even bread, its not what will you pay for it, everything has a price tag!!

I prefer seeing prices as well but I am going to reply to this with one thing.

Pricing on this site is frustrating as all get-out and very few people are willing to negotiate. I want to negotiate, I want to hammer out a deal we'll both be happy with. 99% of people here, though, see a price they don't like and walk away. I've saved 3 deals where the other guy just didn't like the price at first and walked away. I had to convince them that I was willing to negotiate. Afterwards, we were left with a deal we were both happy with. Those deals would have been dead in the water, all for people unwilling to negotiate. I AM NOT WAL-MART. MY PRICES ARE NOT FIXED ( unless I tell you otherwise). If you don't like the price make an offer. If there is no price make an offer.

If you want to go to Wal-Mart, go there, don't bother me because...

    Big ++++++++1

I am not a haggler. Tell me the price and I will decide to buy or not buy. Many times people don;t want to commit to a price because they think, "What if can get a few cents / dollars more?"

It's like going to a card show and none of the cards has a price. You ask, "What do you want for that card?" only to hear, "Wahat are you willing to pay?". My answer to that is ,"Goodbye"

No one is, it's really annoying. That's why I sometimes avoid putting price3s on.
    Here's how it goes:

I have card X. I post card X for $Y.yy. No one comes near it. I lower the price. No one comes near it. I take the price off and ask for open offers and I start getting them.

Than I turn around and people are complaining about a lack of pricing in threads.

You guys have to decide what you want before you start criticizing the sellers.

It's buyers on here that create this paticular "problem" by treating everyday ordinary people like a giant conglomerate corporation. As well, I think there's just as much, "I don't want to make an offer because what if I can get it for a few cents/dollars less?" as there is, "I don't want to post a price because what if I can get a few cents/dollars more?"

Honestly as a frequent seller, I try to put prices on the things I have for sale, accompanied by a price/price range. Very rarely are the prices I have for my cards set in stone. Almost every deal I make, I end up either bundling for discounts or shaving a few bucks off so the buyer feels they got a deal.

The reason why sellers put up "Best Offer" or no prices is because (for me anyways) putting up pics, making a sales thread, researching recent Ebay sales, and deciding on my prices can be time consuming. Its very frustrating when you sit down for an hour or 45 minutes making a well researched and well constructed sale thread, only to have no sales. I can throw cards up on Ebay in less than 2 minutes with pics/prices, but then I am subject to fees and unreasonable Ebay buyers. I would rather sell on SCF or other forums because more often than not, the buyers are better, the transaction is smoother, I pay no fees (except paypal transfer fees at 4%) and I actually get to communicate with the person I am selling to. But if all that time and effort goes into it, and nothing comes out, Ebay becomes the better option. I hardly ever use "Firesale", but when I do, I give my buyers well below Ebay prices.

I love the art of the deal, however I will not insult anyone's intelligence, or my own for that matter by using the words "Taking Offers".

Might as well say to potential buyers..... "Low-Ball Me, for a NO"

I have never printed the words, "let's negotiate", but I think this might be the way to go.

FIRE SALE and WHALE are often the most OVERUSED words on SCF.

I completely agree with you. Fire Sale to the simplest, straightforward definition means: selling cards quick, need money, here is the price, take it.

It's like a garage sale. They are meant to go and go fast. If these words on the boards follow it (CMB ... unless prices are in the title), make an offer, not going below ebay prices; you can basically throw the thread out.

I really hope people start learning basic terms. Fire Sale is not an internet slang so I think all individuals are capable looking up what the word means.

    ...

Make an offer... understandable, and dependant on the type of thread. Fire Sale however, NO... there is only one meaning to a Fire Sale, Garage Sale, Junk Sale... w/e.

Make an offer... drives away tire-kickers and I get that.

I only hate it when I have people PM or posting will trade this for that, or the CMB see if you can use something for card X.

Buddy, my thread clearly state the one and only want for a certain. And those PC cards are only meant to be traded for my SPECIFIC wants.

And often, I get this reaction. What how come you don't take my $1, $2, $10 cards for your Crosby Rookie. Or how about I trade you these for your Ovechkin Rookie below it. Or even worse, they start pestering saying the colour words and phrases.

My solution: CAPS, BOLD, SIZE 5, have the sentences repeated at least 3 times in my thread. And ignore PMs. Sorry if it comes off rude, but some individuals either have to learn to read or loose the sense of entitlement just because you are interested in my cards.
