I would normally say you're not giving people enough credit, but I think you maybe be right about this.
As a seller who says taking offers, I'm allowing you to tell me what you want to pay. Thing is, if it's a card with sales of $100, I know EVERYONE wants it for $20, you don't need to tell me you want it for $20. I know EVERYONE wants to resell it for a big profit, you don't need to tell me that. I don't see asking for offers as insulting anything, especially intelligence. I see the obvious, "I'm trying to rip you off so I can make the money, not you," as being incredibly insulting.

Not personally insulting, but a business slight for all involved.
But how do we get to a positive starting point when secretly Buyer A wants a $120.00 Card for $15.00 and will probably pay $30.00, and secretly Seller A is more than willing to accept $30-$35 ?? but boldly let's on that this is a $120.00 Card.
When I mentioned not insulting anyone's intelligence, I meant it in a complementary manner, as presented in the above scenario. We all hopefully know herein where the fair selling price lies, I at least give intelligence credit for this, though I've been proven wrong many times by Full-Priced sellers.Last edited by centrehice; 03-12-2012 at 03:44 PM.

Sounds pretty similar to me. If someone doesn't have prices listed, I'll move on to the next thread. I'm not a haggler when it comes to buying things for generally the same reasons that you listed.

"The adversary system is based on the idea that if one side overstates their version of the truth and the other side overstates their version of the truth, the truth will eventually come out. Why can't we all just tell the truth?"
I can't remember who said it, but it's one of my favourites.

I think on ebay... starting prices are really up to the seller themselves.
But for SCF, where most people know the ins and outs of the hobby. Usually half the BV is the starting point a card should be sold for. You go up or down from that price point if no set price has been named yet. That's what I think anyways.

All I want is for people to use Ebay prices. SCREW book values, that's made by Beckett, not by collectors and what they value cards as.

I agree and think this is the best way to determine a starting point for pricing. It's about price, not value. Value is an intrinsic term which differs from one person to another. Does anyone really believe that the $10 food chopper in the commercial is seriously a $150 value!
Ebay, like it or not, shows what people are willing to pay for a particular card. This is not based on people's opinions and theories and some book pricing is. this is based on actual sales that we can all see.Hidden Content

I could not have said it any better. I'd like to have some kind of idea of what the seller wants for the card(s). And if my thinking of what I want to pay for a card and what the seller wants to receive for a card is way off, then I will go on. I don't like to play the haggle and/or guessing game. I also don't have the time and interest to go back and forth to negotiate a price.
Also, I don't want to make an offer and the seller feels that I'm lowballing them. I try and make what I feel is a fair offer, but it may not be perceived as so.
Just me 2 cents............
