Ok, found some info on how to get the UD versions:

How it Works...
Register for Your Free Rookie Showcase Card
* Find out your free Rookie Card's "Team" today!
* Follow the rookie class and watch them skate.
* Upper Deck will update you on which rookies will comprise the Rookie Showcase lineup, provide images of on-action photos that will be used for the cards and confirm the timing of the prodcution of the cards.
* Upper Deck will begin mailing the free Rookie Showcase cards beginning December 2005/January 2006.

ah yes.. I remember this program well. They would only allow one Rookie Showcase card, and one per week of the Hockey Showcase card for every unique Upper Deck ID (and address, if I recall). I enlisted the help of all my family to increase my collection.. got some nice cards out of that program. It was fun
