Some eBay buyers...
This is going to be a semi rant, about something that just happened to me.
I really can't believe the nerve of some people... I have a card listed on eBay at a $X + 15.99 shipping (because it's listed over $50) and someone offers me $20 for the card... so I countered at $49.99 (assuming that they'd understand that my shipping charges would drop to $2.99).
I get the following message from the prospective buyer:
"How do you want 49.99 plus your incredibly ™™™™ty cost of shipping? One just for 31.00"
So.. firstly you insult me (btw shipping with insurance to the US is $22-24, I eat 6-8), and then go on to mention how you were lowballing me with the original $20 offer... Right... makes me want to sell it to you!
The card is a Landeskog Inked Sweaters... I'm sure I'm a bit high in price at the moment, but the guy just won the Calder, and it _is_ my card. I'm a hobbyist, not a shop.
Again, just a rant!

It's tough, but you have to remember that eBay isn't set up for sliding scale shipping for buyers OR sellers.
In fact, according to the legal-eeze in the text when you submit an offer, eBay specifically instructs the buyer that shipping is NON-NEGOTIABLE. The BO feature was clearly not set up with the intent to be able to comply with their (eBay & Paypal) own policies.
Clearly, your buyer was easily to the 'tool'-side of the spectrum, but on the surface, it's anything but clear that your shipping charge will drop by $13 (unless you added a note, of course).

The only good lesson my dad taught me is that something (including sports cards) is only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. And its your card to ask whatever you want with the risk being that if it is too high then you wont sell it and if its too low then you lose money. People need to be grown up and do like I do.....if I dont like a price I will offer and if you dont like it I simply say Thanks and good luck with your future deals. Geezzz....I hate dealing with immature people and hate you had to....good luck with your future deals!!

Yeah.. my item descriptions say "any items or combination of items totalling under $50 will be 2.99, and everything over $50 will require tracking at a cost of $15.99"
Plus this is a buyer with 800+ feedback, so not a beginner...

Totally agree! Things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for it... for me though as I'm a hobbyist and not a store, I want full value for my card or I'll just keep it. That's how I see things. I don't 'need' to sell it.. it just doesn't 'need' to be in my PC. :)

In fairness, I don't think he was lowballing you on the offer. He submitted an offer that after shipping costs matched up with the market. It's your right to decline, but I'm not sure this buyer deserves to be roasted on this one.

It's not the offer I was offended with (or I wouldn't have countered).. it was him actually cursing at my shipping costs. I realise anyone can go online, but have a little class, or at least ask if the shipping can be reduced.
Thing is.. if I put 2.99 on as shipping and a card is 199.99 OBO, and say it goes for 125... I can get neg'd if I charge the tracking and insurance at $15.99 (even if it says it in the item description).
So what do you do.. get no views due to putting the high shipping in, or get neg'd... really silly system.
