Potential Non-Payer - eBay Question - Report a Buyer / Re-list an Item
I don't list much or should I even say ever on ebay.
Thought I would take advantage of the current release of Ultimate and put out one of the items I got.
I waited a couple days and accepted an offer on the item.
My own personal policy on the auction (due to the amount) is pay within 24 hours or let me know. I ship within 24 hours as well.
Two days past, with 2 messages and 2 invoices as questions to the whereabouts of the payment, I finally get a response, basically "aggravated" and claiming "he was not in town" ... blah, blah, blah... according to eBay I have 4 days to pay. I pay when I want not when you want me to.
Funny how these people who are always "out of town" seems to be able to answer emails but can't spend 5 minutes logging into PayPal or clicking the eBay invoice and paying.
I said fine... finally you let me know where in the world you are. On his offer, there was no note, no previous email, so how on earth do I know he isn't just lack of better term bs-ing me from the start.
Fast forward another 2-days (4-days) total. Email: "Sorry, I am not in town" blah, blah, blah... "But, I will make payment within the next day or so"
Tomorrow will be exactly one week. 3-days since "I will pay within a day or so." I think I have given more than enough time. Today, I sent him a final email saying to make payment tomorrow or item will be relisted.
...
Now here is the question. This guy has over thousand feedback with nothing negative on his record. Made a few expensive sales and purchased a few expensive items before (from a fellow member).
Either way, I think after that amount of time, I reserve the right to do something.
So...
a) I don't want to deal with this guy anymore... a week is more than enough and frankly the world keeps spinning regardless if he is away or not... if I report him on eBay, I read the guidelines and it says I have to wait another 4-days for him to pay
... do I seriously have to do that? Or can I just end the listing already. After tomorrow, I don't even want to bother giving him the opportunity to buy it.
b) When or if I relist do I have to wait from (a) to end or by relisting does it cancel part (a)?
Thanks for the feedback. His username will be made public tomorrow if he doesn't pay.
Cheers,

If both parties agree to cancel the listing, that's okay. You can do that - but he has to agree as well. You should get final value fees back.
If you file a non-paying-bidder claim though, basically to get him in "trouble" with eBay (which sounds perfectly justified, IMO) then you do have to give him the option of paying for it still.
My personal rule when selling on eBay:
Send an invoice after auction ends
Send an invoice 24 hours later, if still not paid
Send an invoice on day three, if still not paid
Send an invoice on day six, and tell them you will file a non-payer claim if they don't contact you in the next 24 hours
File non-paying bidder claim.
It's all you can do. I try to pay foreverything the day of winning, but not everyone is like that. Depending on how they actually submit payment to paypal... there are lots of reasons that late payment may be valid.... it's just the lack of communication that is not.
If you don't wait for at least a week to lapse though, eBay is just going to tell you to be more patient.
Oh, and yes. You need to wait the 4 days (or whatever it is) from eBay. Once that time is up (and assume that he doens't pay) you'll get your money back, and you'll be able to relist.

24 hours is far too short of time for payment. I've sold well over 5,000 items on eBay with even with a BIN, I give 5-7 days.
People aren't always around. And yes, you seriously have to wait over 4 days in terms of ending things.
If he has over 1,000 good Feedback and no negs like you say, he may be telling the truthLast edited by centrehice; 08-24-2012 at 04:39 PM.

You risk retaliation if you keep pressing him to pay. He might pay, but then give you a negative for being too pushy. He might not pay, then use another account to buy from you and leave a negative. Sellers have to be extra patient and be careful not to anger buyers because buyers can hurt your reputation with low DSR and negative feedback, sellers can't hurt a buyer at all. And non paying bidders strikes are a joke. They don't matter.

When it comes to Ebay, I think this is good advice.
I don't sell a lot on there, but I won't usually even ask about non-payment for a week. I'll send an invoice after the auction ends, then again about three days later. Even after a week, I keep it friendly and just ask when I can expect payment. I know some of the excuses I hear are suspicious-sounding, but I always try to keep it positive.
If I don't have payment or valid reasons for not paying after 10-12 days, then I'll look at filing the NPB. I probably go too soft, but Ebay gives buyers a lot of power.
And for what it's worth, asking for payment within 24 or 48 hours is meaningless. Ebay gives, I believe, four days so it's not even worth posting arbitrary deadlines.

I always use the " require immediate payment" option on my auctions. I never understand how someone can click on buy it now and then not be able to click on the pay now on the same page and then wait 3-7 days to pay. It baffles me.

Totally agree - nothing to be gained (other than a bit of satisfaction at venting) by being pushy / aggresive with buyers, you can't really force them to pay, and if you anger them they can hurt your rep. Best to just be polite and stick to the facts, and just close out the case as quickly as possible with a NPB, stick them on your blocked list so you never deal with them again and move on.
It's funny, I see that both myself and sjw241 have had the same non-paying bidder recently... "11.sherbear" is someone to avoid on ebay. I listed a batch of Sedin cards in July, they won a couple items - I sent an invoice, a follow-up message, opened a NPD case, and nothing, no response. A couple weeks later I list another batch of cards - and while my NPD case is still open from the original batch, this same user again bids on and wins a few items. I know they are not "out of town" or "away from a computer" because this user has been paying for other items won in the meantime (and receiving positive feedback from the respective sellers) - and they are also leaving positive feedback for the various items they received. Seems they simply think it's ok to bid on whatever catches their fancy, then pay for the ones that they really were interested in, and ignore all the rest. I'd recommend 11.sherbear for everyone's block lists.

To clarify,
Those two emails and invoices are reminders and communication. I'm not pushing him to pay.
I honestly don't care if there was a delayed payment if it a regular item.
This item is over $1000. The only time I told him to pay is today. All I wanted is communication.
I had absolutely zero until he finally replied. I'm not there to guess when you pay. You buy it either pay for it right away or have the courtesy to email me when.
Frankly, I don't care how many feedback someone has or sales and purchase made ... I find quite a problem when someone has to "wait" to pay for something. If you don't have the money then don't purchase the item.
Cant afford it, don't buy it.
I pay for something right away whether it is 50 cents or $10,000
But I guess what can I do, more than half the world lives on the theory buy now, pay later.

As long as Ebay allows buyers to do that, you pretty much have no choice but to suck it up.
For the record, I subscribe to your philosophy. I go on Ebay every night to pay for any purchases I've made in the previous 24 hours.

$1000.00 Card you say.
I'd never sell a $1,000.00 card on eBay. You are begging for disaster.
Private Sale - Money Order only, both parties have to sign for both envelops. When Money Order is cashed, card is then sent and Registered and Signed for. This and nothing else.
You have to protect the deal and eBay is not involved enough as 3rd party to warrant any type of seller protection.
