I suspect that we all will be waiting even longer for the redemption cards, especially for the players that jumped to Europe already

UD nor Panini would release less product. It doesn't make sense for them. They may release at different set of products that don't cater to the rookie market though.
From what I've heard, both Artifacts and UD Series 1 is scheduled for release. Artifacts are coming first week October while UD Series within the same month or so. My LCS already got their order forms out.
I really hope UD does some like the 11-12 Fleer Retro they did for basketball.
If anyone knows what I'm talking about you'll get what I mean. If you don't they are literally inserts based on sets in the 90s but of modern players mixed with 90s athletes like Jordan ... etc. that sell from $300 - $5,000... for AN INSERT! Box prices went from $100 to $500-600 now.
We could do something similar for hockey based on the inserts we love... e.g. Starquest Golds, Stanley Cup Hologram...
It would be a simple $70-100 box mixed with the old insert designs of both 90s and modern day players, maybe a few bybacks of the 90s.
I can guarantee that would be a hot set for the people who remember. Those younger audience would probably be flabbergasted by the lack of patches, jerseys, and autos LOL.

Based on the current contracts, I doubt that the lockout will have any effect on licenses. Both Panini and Upper Deck are signed for several years yet.... so I can't see a lockout changing that. Would be very surprised to learn that one of them get dropped, or someone else gets added, after the lockout is over.
If UD or Panini wanted to do an international set - they would have to pay for a license. You see that Upper Deck does a lot of Team Canada cards already.... as they have that license.... but they would need to reach out to club teams in Europe, or other national bodies, about using their logos - and pay them for it.
The players, I'm not sure. They've got an agreement with the NHLPA to produce cards.... and use the imagine of the PA's members. If a PA member (covered by the group licensing) plays for a club team in Switerland (for example) I have no idea if that deal still covers them or not. I would suspect that it does, but really don't know.

Yup, but with the NHL they can get the legends to sign. It still will add that OMG AN AUTO feeling when you pull a no-name AHL 4th liner auto... but they could easily include Gretzky.

Panini has not announced any sets other than Classic Signatures. Panini can survive not releasing any sets this year as they are a major player in the other sports.
UD has already released sell sheets on Artifacts,Series 1 and Black Diamond. I can see UD continuing to release products as they are now a minor player in all other sports.
Besides after UD's delays this year 2012-13 Black Diamond should be released sometime during the 2013-14 season....lol

How is UD going to stay in business by producing less cards or no cards? Not going to happen.
