    Sin Tax

Everyone knows I don't care for taxes nor do I appreciate the gov't telling me as an adult what I can or cannot put inside in my own body. That being said how do you feel about the concept of sin taxes extra taxes on cigarettes, alcohol, drugs (if the were ever legalized) etc. The revenue produced could fund education and treatment as well as medical care for those injured because of the use of those. That way you still have the legal right to use those products but you just have to pay more tax on them. And if a sin tax is a financial burden then you have to make better choices about what is really important to you. Eating, having a roof over your head, lights ect or getting high. Also I would be against a sin tax on adult entertainment because it is a natural body function and without it none of us would be here. What are your thoughts?

Cigarettes and alcohol are already taxed to the teeth here, so no.

Yeah i know that there are already additional taxes on them but I wouldn't have a problem if they were taxed more. Just like I also think that some illegal drugs should be legalized and the gov't would make a killing off the tax revenue.

You can call it what you want, and I don't know if it's the same (likely not from what I've seen of the US) for you, but here that tax exists for certain products already. I see no need to double it.

Also, if you're going to call it "sin tax" you should include all sins. Did you covet they neighbor's wife? $200 please.

I am in favour of a "Sin" tax on anything deemed "not necessary". Tax the heck out of things like luxury autos, electronics, etc.

I disagree. The purpose of a sin tax is for things that are not neccessary to live and could be harmful. The gov't shouldn't be in the business of having total control over ones life. That being said everyone understands the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol, smoking etc and the effects it could also have on non users. No one will stop you but if you chose to do so you should also have to pay taxes to help pay for rehab, helping others who were injured because of drinking and driving etc. Most people will not die or get injured because they bought a big screen tv, computer, xbox etc.

Call it a "judgement" tax. That's what it's turning into.

Applying a tax to a product does not give the government "total control of one's life". We are told that "sin taxes" are applied in an effort to discourage consumption of the product (hypocritical as it is) not in order to use the taxes to pay for services associated with the products.

In reality, they apply the taxes to products they know consumers will continue to buy regardless.

You are right the gov't will not have total control of your life by taxing you but they are controlling a certian aspect of your life by telling you, you cannot legally use certian products. Weather the sin tax is applied to discourage someone from using a product or to pay for services after the fact dosen't matter both are still good ideas. At the end of the day you will still have the right to use those products you just have to make the decision does it make good financial sense to do so.

I also think that gambling should be added to the list of sin taxes.
