I also think that gambling should be added to the list of sin taxes.

Gambling is just a voluntary tax already. At least it is up here. And I believe you guys have to pay tax on winnings, unlike us. If I win a Million dollars, I get a Million dollars, no taxes - ever. :)

What about the lottery for the states who have lottery scratch tickets/powerball/etc. So they should charge for the ticket plus an additional tax?

So if I buy a winning ticket say in Virginia, I not only pay taxes on the ticket and then also pay Virginia taxes on my winnings. When I come back to North Carolina where I live, I will then have to pay taxes on the money I won (which will be substantially less) but will have to pay taxes on the winning amount. So in essence, I will have paid a tax on the ticket, tax on my winnings in Virginia, taxes in North Carolina and then taxes to the federal governmeny. Sounds like double taxation to me.

I get the argument of taxings things like cigarettes or alcohol or tanning in which the taxes could help fund treatment for the potential harm these can cause, but is that really the case? do these taxes actually go to fund research or treatment or anything dealing with side effects of using these items? I don't find it completely absurd that luxury or non essential items could be taxed, but for me I'd rather real in spending before trying to tax items more. At the moment, cigarettes are taxed heavily so do they really need to add more? I would think that marijuana would be taxed just like cigarettes, though.

aren't most lotteries in essence volunteering to pay a tax in hopes of possibly winning a small amount of that tax money? I know here in Indiana, all of the funds created by lottery tickets that aren't used as prizes are used to offset taxes. When they started the lottery our vehicle taxes were absurdly high. They used a lot of the money that the lottery brought in to drive them down. I see no need for them to tax the $1 or whatever price when it's basically a voluntary tax payments.

I agree with you. Cigarettes are taxed heavily here in North Carolina, maybe not as bad as say New York. However, a lot of that tax money here goes to ads about smoking and what it causes. None of it goes to treatment facilities or to fund organizations like that. I have issues with that.

Also, the lottery here was started up by a governor who snuck it into law. It was not wanted here. But he promises education would get all a lot of money form the lottery. Turns out less then 2% of all profits from the lottery go to education and the bigger counties get more of the money. Again, I have issues with that.

Taxing more items wil lnot increase funding to many things. It will go into pockets of bigger lobbying corporations or politicians. And not be used for the betterment of the people.

Many studies (no I am not looking any of them up, so do not ask) show that consumption taxes are the fairest types. Sin taxes are basically the same thing.

I agree but that is more of an inditement of the the tax system or big gov't as a whole and it's beauracry and not the tax itself.

I believe we are already taxed up to our necks on ridiculus taxes. Before long they are going to tax how much air we breathe or how much food we eat. It is just crazy to think more taxes should be add on SINs that people enjoy, especially when we know th emoney would not go to fund anything beneficial.
