I wonder if Tomas Plekanec would fit that bill - I'm sure there's plenty of Habs fans out that have some of his cards but he's a very under-the-radar kind of guy in the hobby. Thoughts?

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I feel Pat LaFontaine doesn't get much hobby love either.

He has only a little over 1000 cards out, and most are in the 80s and 90s.

Some of you have commented, and said things that sum up the state of collecting perfectly. I quote:

30ranfordfan said: "This current era of collecting places little value on anything that isn't a patch and/or an auto."

Fred Bear said: "The sad truth of it is, too, that without a '6-color patch the size of Alaska 4 years (or more) after retirement', not many collectors care."

Thank you for saying these things guys, because these two statements are bang on!!

Personally, I don't care much for jersey cards, patch cards or most autographed jersey (or autographed patch) cards. I don't even consider 1-of-1 cards unique, because they are not. Consider how many jerseys an everyday NHL hockey player wears during the year. Probably hundreds. Well, with so many jersey auto and patch auto sets made every year, what are the odds that these particular patch areas won’t be used again? Of course these areas of a patch, from another jersey, will be used again! Therefore, this particular card is not as unique as first thought.

I am a rookie card collector first and foremost. I do like an autographed jersey (or autographed patch) card if it features a Leafs player - but only if the player is pictured in a Leafs uniform and the memorabilia is from a Leafs uniform. Nothing is as frustrating as (for example) a Phil Kessel Limited Logos card, pictured as a Leaf, but the patch is from Boston!

    1. The age of collectors plays a role.

    2. People have short memories. As consumers, we're drawn to what's newest and shiniest sometimes. If Thomas Hertl farted in a jar, there's a collector out there who would be willing to pay 3 figures for that right now. Ok, better example... a sticker-auto'd, non-actual rookie card of Hertl would probably sell for what right now? Buuuuut a hard sign of Phil Esposito would fetch half of that most likely? Let's compare their career numbers and see how foolish this seems. :) It's only because Hertl is the new, hot thing. A year from now, he'll be as forgotten as Kreider, Baertschi, heck, even remember when Sean Couturier was a hot commodity... a few months ago... LOL. People lack perspective and are easily duped when there's no thought to what they're collecting and why.

I would say most swedish players with a small few exceptions.
It have always been canadien born players that get the hype (thats where the most diehard collectors are located).
Even if a swedish player did as many goals as lets say crosby he would still not be worth moore then a 2 liner canadien born player.
That is offcourse the fan base that matters we are only like 10 million ppl in sweden and far from everyone likes hockey.
But fine for me as i collect certain swedish players.
    Just my input

Unless a team has a bunch of unique games a player won't wear more than 10 jerseys a season. It's not like Football where they get a new one each game. I understand what you are getting at. Some of the nicer patches are cool the first time you see them but then almost an identical patch comes out the next year in the same set.

I walked around Fall Expo with a Chris Chelios /19 Prime Colors. Most people I tried to deal with said this to me: "That's a beautiful patch, but it's Chris Chelios."

I'm not a Wings fan, so I don't know how he played with the team, but he's a HOF-er and I would have thought it was easier to move it.

As for a "recent" name... just pulled a Michal Jordan /10 Select auto. Yeah...
