I don't think anyone is so direct as to say "if I'm not profiting I'm not buying". That said, there's nothing wrong with a certain level of expectation as to ROI. It's not different than any other discretionary, or even necessary purchase you make. You want the best value, the best return, the best bang for your buck.

For 85 years in the Hobby, the ROI was between 75% and 500% depending on what Parkurst, Topps and OPC cards you have from 1951-1988 and what you paid for them by box.

There has been nothing manufactured by anyone since UD Series 1, 2004-05 where the ROI was any better than 50%. It has dropped down now bt about 15% of ROI because Game-Used Jersey cards are only sold for $1.00-$3.00 on the resale market, yet when part of HITS in a box are showing an initial investment of from $25.00-$60.00 on box purchase.

So if Upper Deck gets an exclusive in hockey that will mean:

baseball Topps exclusive
hockey Upper Deck exclusive
basketball Panini exclusive
football Topps & Panini with Upper Deck having NCAA football

That correct? Wonder if somebody will make a move to go after an exclusive for the NFL now?

By the way, people did not buy cards by the box in the early 50's.

I bought Parkhurst by the pack and each pack was five cents. I can't imagine how many wax wrappers I crumbled up and threw out. They would be worth almost as much as some of the cards in mint condition.

Still have all of my major Parkhurst Rookie cards in pristine condition, thanks Mom for never touching them.

Awareness will prevent anything modern from EVER increasing in value to the degree anything vintage did. Cards were stored MUCH differently back then, and I use the term stored very loosely here. I doubt many packs were opened with a pack of sleeves and toploaders nearby, LOL.

For all the talk about ROI now, up till the 90's the ROI on any box was basically zero. All my friends in school spent our allowance money week-by-week, and typically just managed to finish the OPC set of the year by the end of the year, then shoved it in a shoebox under the bed. The idea that we should be able to recoup some of our expenditures was the furthest thing from our mind.

I understand what you're saying, but back then you had a much smaller selection of products, and even the most expensive, only ran for $100 a box of so. The market, and specifically the target audience, has been completely redefined in the last 10-15 years or so. I used to love going into my local card shop and getting a $6 pack of 1996 SPX with one card in it hoping to pull that crazy rare autograph. No matter what your budget was, back in the day, you had access to pretty much all the products. Now, unless either you make good money, or are crazy into cards and spending beyond your means, it is hard to bust boxes of anything anyone would really want on the secondary market. I know what people mean when they say they dont collect for the money, but its very different when you love to collect, to accept that you have no shot at getting the best cards of the players you collect, unless you spend hundreds of dollars. That 1996 Spx pack I'd get back in the day had at least the hopes of landing one of the most sought after Gretzky auto's ( at the time). Now, good luck finding that sort of product. At best you'll get an over produced sticker auto that still looks like doodoo compared to the Ultimate's, Cup, Dominion, Superlative, etc.
