Ya, I was thinking about that too. You can still get those blaster boxes from Wal-mart but I believe the odds on them are a lot worse than hobby boxes.
I was extremely lucky with a blaster box one year that I purchased at Shoppers Drug Mart and pulled a Crosby young Gun.

I think my local shop is still selling the hobby packs. I would assume there should be a place near you that still has them.

Boxes like OPC, and MVP are great as "training wheels". UDS1 is what most people open in the hobby as it is a staple for the Young Guns, and even jerseys. All three are a great choice as they a fun to open, and can be traded quite easily with other collectors which adds to the fun factor.
After the wheels are off, you might want to consider Artifacts or SP Authentic with him. They are still fun breaks, but the hits depending on the box might give him a bit of a wow factor. You'll know he's hooked if you pull some sweet looking patch autos, and he won't be able to sit still! ;)Searching for: Jagr, Palffy, Stumpel, and Boyd

Looks like the UD series 1 from this year are either complete garbage or a decent hit. Lol.
Any idea on the prices at the Fall Expo for a box? I'll be heading there on Sunday. :)

That's what the hobby has become. That's why I feel working on set building (OPC or MVP) is a better way, especially for kids. Then, you're not "let down" or "wasting money." Just my two cents.

A blaster has two young guns and a hobby box has 6. The blasters are usually less than 1/3 the price though. The blasters are more economical if you are looking for basic Young Guns. Hobby has the added numbered hits including exclusives and high gloss.

I would choose a product like rookie anthology or an off year higher end product. More potential wow factors for your kid. They don't see ygs as a big deal but love a patch or auto. Just one parents view to anothers
