5.56 isn't big enough
Bullets pose controversy
The smaller, steel-penetrating M855 rounds continue to be a weak spot in the American arsenal. They are not lethal enough to bring down an enemy decisively, and that puts troops at risk, according to Associated Press interviews.

Alot of us military members agree that the M16/M4 isn't firing a big enough round. The 5.56 round just doesn't put down the target like you need. The M9 Pistol that the troops carry isn't much better. Better to use it as a club.

I've often wondered about that. Most of the AR rounds I've shot were nothing but glorified .22 rounds. What do you think should replace them and why?

Looking more towards a 7.62 round. I prefer the Old M14.

Aren't 7.62 the glorified .22s I was talking about?

Obviously the powder load is larger on a 7.62 but the 7.62 is really just a .22 slug that goes a lot faster than the regular .22. It still doesn't have the stopping power of a large caliber rifle or a large caliber pistol for that matter.

think of the 7.62 as more of a short 30-06,it rips stuff up

I dunno man. I shot a lot of 7.62 round at the academy and it didn't really "rip stuff up"... especially when compared to our duty-carry .40 cal sig pistols or the .12 gauge shotty slugs.

Shotguns are fine for room clearing but not for field stuff. Pistols are fine but for long range I would love to have the M14 it would allow me to reach out accurately with a heavier slug.
I have fired numerous rifles/MG and prefer for the Us to come up with thier own version of an AK. It doesn't jam when dirt is near it like the M16 does.

Have you checked out the Magpul Masada? Its supposedly supposed to make the common AR a lot more durable.
