Okay Red, here is what I think, the welfare program is horrible. I do think that we do need a welfare program with better policies and oversight. Too many are taking advantage of the system. While in college, I knew a single mother of one who was living in a subsidized apt. getting so much assistance that she had steaks in the freezer and money in the bank. She also had a good family who could have helped her out. She didnt even know who the father was as it could have been one of four guys. She was abusing the system and it was wrong. She knew it, made jokes about it and didnt care. These are the type of people that need to be eliminated from the program. The kicker is her parents paid for her to stay in college.
I have a heart, many people do need help and are very deserving of it. We need the program. All I want is for the program to be revamped and cut out the abusers of the program. That is all

i appreciate the story. i grew up with just my mom, and she worked her tail off. she makes real good money now, but she most likely could have qualified and received assitance when i was younger....and i wish she would've. it would've been nice to have some steaks every once in a while, and some money in the bank.

if she, or anybody is committing fraud, then it should be prosecuted...but it doesnt matter who the father of the baby was or if her family "could" have helped her out...they didnt. she most likely was only receiving aid because of the baby, and thats really all that matters to me.

i can agree with you that it needs revamped and abuse should be investigated properly

redgonewild - I am interested in the passion behind your defense. You are quick to ask us if we think everyone on welfare is a drug addict who sits on their butt (which no one thinks) but do you admit that there are those on welfare that fit that description? All the original poster was saying is that drug tests would wean out those who do. Why is that a problem?
And, another point that I don't think anyone said, is that the test would show disposable income. If someone can afford to by illegal drugs, I they obviously don't need government assistance.

there are people in every walk of life in every profession in every corner of the earth who use drugs. an estimated 40% of Americans are regular consumers of beer...they are getting funkin wrecked regulary. you want to find disposable income, try any establishment that serves alcohol.

it just seems like every time i hear somebody griping about welfare its because there are drug users, like thats the main problem with welfare. the email specifically talks about "how much money this country would save if people had to pass a urine test"...we're not going to be solving problems with seriously harmful drugs like heroin & meth by testing welfare recipients...we're going to eliminate people who smoke a joint while cheaters, drunks, and people addicted to prescription drugs will pass with flying colors. i can promise you there are more stoners that work for a living than those that collect welfare

i just dont find welfare programs to be that bad of an idea, but can agree there should be better oversight to make sure it goes where its intended. i'd much rather have my tax money go to feeding & sheltering the poor, elderly & disabled than invading foreign countries...we got money for war, but cant feed the poor

the main difference between welfare and people working for disposable income is just that.... the people who work for their money can spend it anyway they want.... i just dont feel the need to give money to someone for food and have it spent on liquor. I know there is more to that post and i will get back to it but i have to go to work now

I agree that we have a problem with the welfare systems in America. However the drug test you take at your place of employment has is not so you can get paid. They are requiring those because they can be sued if you get hurt or hurt someone else while on the job. I think this starts with many insurance companies these days making that a requirement in order to get liability insurance or get a cheaper rate.

i dont have a source...its just an educated guess based on my life experiences

but these numbers should suffice....100 million americans have smoked or regularly smoke marijuana....less than 3 million american families are on welfare....good enough?

Are you serious? Of course there are more people who smoke weed then are on welfare. I want numbers saying that the percentage is higher with the working force then those on welfare which you implied.
