Panini To Purchase Donruss?
With last week's shake-up in the basketball market still generating quite a buzz, the folks at Panini are reportedly at it again, only this time with its sights on purchasing Donruss. While the folks at Donruss are declining to comment at this time on the possibility of the sale, all indications are the two companies are currently working out the financial concerns regarding the sale. If the sale goes through as expected, it would give Panini instant credibility in the sports card market, aid in U.S. distribution of its new line of basketball products and allow the financially challenged Donruss company to continue to exist, albeit under the Panini umbrella. Look for more on this story as details become available at www.tuffstuff.com and Tuff Stuff's Sports Collectors Monthly.

i dont understand why so many people are piss at this company....i have heard people talk trash about topps and ud for years. now we have a new company coming in. they may be pretty good. i think people should at least give them a chance before judging them. they obviosly have really put some coin in this project. therefore they probaly will come out with some nasty cards to get people believing in them. i look foward to this company in basketball products

I think people are "angry" or negative toward Panini bread because they don't have any credibility or respect in the sports card market yet. Yes they might be a fantastic company and may be great for the hobby but we have seen nothing yet. Respect and credibility has to be earned in this world, not freely given. All the naysayers are taking what they have seen Panini do in the past (90's basketball sticker cards, Dora the explorer stickers, current soccer cards) and attaching the qualities of those products to this unknown future basketball product. Unfair, maybe, but that's the way this world works. And unless Panini comes up with some truly mindblowing product to change people's preconception and help them forget about UD/Topps, then the opinion will not change. Should we give them a chance in the future, sure; should we be throwing them a parade for saving basketball cards from the depths of despair and the evil clutches of UD/Topps? I say hold the confetti for now.
And think about it, why does Panini bread need to buy Donruss, a failing company? They bought it for the name, for whatever credibility Donruss have left in the card world. I'm sure they're getting plenty of feedback that many collectors don't like their brand and don't trust their brand, so they are trying to buy Donruss to shift that a little bit. People would be more receptive to buying "Donruss NBA Extravangance" than "Panini NBA Elite" based on past reputation alone.

I think it is a good move. It gives them distribution channels in the U.S. right away. It gives them a name in the U.S. card market. I would be willing to lay down some coin for Donruss basketball, wouldn't you all?

Kinda like UD. They gobbled up Fleer. Topps was the last big dog left.
Absolutely!

Yeah, they might start producing Donruss products the way Upper Deck started producing Fleer products. Of course, while Donruss is an established name in this hobby, they've never made basketball before. You don't suppose they'll buy ITG next, do you?
