Watchmen Reviews
I've been looking over some reviews this morning...hoping my wife surprises me by taking me to see it tonight or tomorrow

It's kind of hard to grasp what it will be like based on the reviews I've read...they are mixed (as most movies are), but it's the reasons that confuse me.
CNN's review says it wasn't very good because it was too faithful to the graphic novel...I thought that was the point?
Ebert's review says it was "rich" and a "powerful experience," but doesn't give it a good or a bad. Of course I don't always (or often) agree with Roger Ebert...so this review makes me want to see it.
The NY Times review knocks it for being set in 1985 and appealing to the type of person who enjoyed the graphic novel...again, isn't that the point? Oh and he also says:
I’m not sure that this hypothetical young man (that he describes earlier)...would necessarily say that Mr. Snyder’s “Watchmen” is a good movie. I wouldn’t, though it is certainly better than the same director’s “300.”
How can you trust the opinion of someone who didn't like 300?
Cinematical.com's review is mixed, but points mostly to good things about the movie. It gives me a sense that the reviewer enjoyed many parts of the movie, but not as a whole. And he gives credit to Snyder for staying true to the graphic novel, but says:
Watchmen is a lighter version of very dark material. On its own, the movie is an efficient adrenaline delivery machine, occasionally taking flight and occasionally sputtering, but most often just motoring down a long road with colorful scenery to pass the time.
I'm sure most people don't care about it as much as I do, sorry to bore you. I'm still pretty psyched about seeing it though

I read some critic who thought they tried to cover too large a story in the movie. Timeline wise. I have never read the novel so I don't know what that means but you may.

I think one of the things that will cause it to get bad reviews is the state of movies today. Now, everyone wants non-stop action and less "slow" time and back story. But you can't do the Watchmen like that. They actually cut out a whole subplot for the movie, but otherwise remained largely faithful to the graphic novel. It's basically like any other book-to-movie: you just can't cram all the details and scenes into two hours, so stuff gets cut. Well Snyder didn't cut out as much as most movies today do....which I think is a great thing, but it will put some people off because it slows down the pace of the film, it makes it longer, and focuses more on character and plot nuances than action and popcorn entertainment.

Yeah I also heard that one reason some people didn't like it was those lulls. Especially the end of the movie.

you have to remember, the critics that do the reviews are the ones that praise a lot of films that most of us would fall asleep during because they want to look like they agree with whatever films the Oscars pick out. If you want viable and honest reviews you have to look into those that enjoy that type of genre, not those that are looking to be right with the selection committee. For Watchmen you'll need to go to sci-fi websites and read what the true fans of the graphic novel films are thinking about it

just got back from seeing it.
overall I give it an 8/10.
they do try and cover a lot but I felt they took the time to do it right. there is a little more nudity than I would have preferred (before anyone blasts me, I am a minister) but the story held together nicely. if anyone has any questions, lmk.

True and they're also trying to appeal to the readers, since that's how they keep a job, and most readers nowadays want the action-packed popcorn entertainment flicks. I enjoy movies that take time to set up the characters, plots, setting, scene, etc in more detail and I don't mind if that makes them "slower."
Thanks for the review! I had heard they show Dr. Manhattan's "apendage," which I thought was completely weird.

yeah, there is a sex scene that lasts about a minute but that bothered me less then Dr. Manhattan full frontal through the entire movie!

Although these reviews are not always on the spot... You can follow or disreguard a few personal opinions that you may dislike from one specific group(AKA Edge magazine on ps3 games)... metacritic is a great review site. Here is the watchman link with a vast amount of reviews from different sources.
