I agree with willie, the actual way the term "white whale" has been used is incredibly personal. I do not consider any triple threads cards to be white whales. Ahab was looking for moby dick and he was his "white whale" but for most people in the world they couldn't care less if he was found or not.

As of right now my white whale is a 2005 Ryan Zimmerman SP Authentic /10. I saw one in a Sioux Falls card shop and I haven never seen another.

I'll try to elaborate, sorry if I was vague.

There are no "White Whale" cards in a hobby-wide sense. YOU determine what cards are YOUR "White Whale". It doesn't necessarily have to be autographed or contain a piece of material; it's just a card that you have to search a great deal of time for (hence the relation to Moby Dick). Often times it is a super-rare card with a very limited print run.

In the case of my collection, the "White Whales" that I search for are NCAA or Junior sets that I have looked years and years for... but I have yet to see one available.

    Hope that helps!

I use the term "While Whale" when looking for cards for my personal collection that are hard to find. These cards do not mean that they are limited in production, just that no matter how hard and long you look you are unable to find them. It could even be a base card from a set, in that it is not rare it is just that now know one seems to have a copy of the card or wants to look for it or they have even thrown it out.

When using the "White Whale" term I do not think of the reference to Moby Dick, but to the reference made in the show Seinfeld. The "White Whale," ( newman) has been illegaly parking for many years. One officer has been tracking him down, but always gets interrupted before he can ticket The White Whale.

as far as triple threads goes, yes all the white whales are auto'd and have jersey pieces in them, they are all 1/1. as far as how they got the name who know's it prob is a moby dick reference. On the back of the cards it says white whale. hope that helps.

OK awesome, see if it says "White Whale" on the back thats something that i can visibly associate with. TY for the help and thanks to all who gave me their feedback.

It should be noted that Triple Threads almost certainly got the idea to print "white whale" on cards from collectors' use of the the term to describe their "ultimate rare find". I think it's more common to hear it in that slang context rather than referring to the Triple Threads inserts.

This was my white whale. I started this set when the product came out in 1996. There are only 4 autos in the set. I got this marino late last year, it was only one I had seen since I started the set.
So 12 years of searching and I caught my "white whale"

Yeah, a "white whale" in a technical sense is that one special card that one's had his/her eye on and would give most anything to get it.

Interms of Topps Triple Threads, they took the idea for a super rare card and called them white whales. All Autographed, all Game-Used, and all Printing plates.
