Yea but I think the real question is whether or not Luongo wants to resign with the Canucks. He's publicly criticized them a few times, and has always said winning is his number one priority. The dude was crying after game 7! Some believe that the whole "make him the captain" thing was just a ploy to make him feel more attached to the organization so he would resign. There's also talk of him possibly going to Detroit because next year Lidstrom's contract is up, which frees up about 7 million in cap space.

liddy's contract has another year. hossa is a UFA which will clear the same amount but i just don't see them signing lulu. You are also forgetting that next year zetty's contract shoots up from 2.9 to 7.4 and then after that it goes 7.75 for a few years

I'm talking about next year as in summer 2010, which is when both Luongo and Lidstrom are free agents. If Luongo is sick of Vancouver, I could easily see him taking a discount to play for a winner.

dont see it happening still. again zetty's contract shoots up 5 mil and franzen's goes up 4 mil. i think they'd have cap issues if they tried to sign him

Lidstrom will never leave detroit..so forget about that. As for Luongo...he'll never play in Detroit unless he's backing up chris osgood until he retires. If roberto wants to win IMO he should go to the caps. Varlamov looked pretty shaky there in game 7...and he's no proven goalie.

Osgood>Luongo
I also think it has to do with the team he has in front of him.
Put him on another team, say one with a "superstar" or a proven team and he would be better.

I only take Brodeur, maybe Cam Ward (As much as I hate him), over Luongo
Luongo, Miller, Brodeur, Ward, Thomas, Nabokov, Fleury, Lundquivst, Turco, Kiprusoff, Backstrom. The only proven game in game out top goaltenders in the league
(Not putting in Mason, Hiller, Varlamov based on one season or postseason)
So thats 11 out of 32, 3 of those 11 didnt make the playoffs, and not because of their play.
Of the other teams not listed that made the playoffs (Ducks, Jackets, RedWings, BlackHawks, Canadiens, Flyers, Captials)
2 of them arent sure what their goalie situation really is (Canadiens, Flyers)
-For most of the season, Philly kept switching between Biron and Nittymaki, Biron was good last year, but Philly has been on him this year
-The Canadiens thought they had the next Roy in Price, but hes a kid, and despite a promisiing future, you see alot of Habs fans, even the coaching at times, wondering if hes ever going to be the one.
4 of them flipped to the backup goalie and rode them in the playoffs (Capitals, Ducks, Blackhawks, Redwings)
-Caps went to Varlamov, a rookie, after game 1 in round 1
-Ducks went with the young hot hand in Hiller over Giguere, a cup winner, vezina winner
-Blackhawks took Khabibulin over Huet, who they brought in and had at one point put Khabibulin on waivers
-RedWings finally got OsGood to stand up after being not only benched but sent down to the minors at one point in the season.
My point is it might seem like there are servicable goalies all over and you could get a cheap one instead of paying a top tier goalie and get similar results, but its not neccessairly the case when you really look at it.
Luongo went to the finals before, and carried Flordia for many many years.
People say goalies are a dime a dozen, but look at Al Montoya, real high draft pick years ago, and hasnt been starting in the league yet.
For all we know, Mason, Hiller, Varlamov, or Rinne could fall off the map next year and be tossed aside, look at Leclaire.
I think you go with the great goalie, the proven commodity, but thats just my 2 cents

Why not just shore up the D around him. As he has always faced more shots than he should. I mean when you fact 40 to 80 shots sometimes perhaps your D is party of the problem. NO one should face that many shots game in game out.
p.s. I know he faced more than 80 in the o.t. and him and Turco last year I think he has like 82 shots. COME ON!!!
