And that's how Obama was elected, people voting against Bush (who wasn't even running, by the way )

McCain wasn't much of a candidate...

Agreed, but he never really factored into the election. People were voting against Bush for the most part, or if they weren't, they were voting against Palin. Almost all of the comparison of the candidates was Obama vs. Palin...it was a given that McCain was more qualified and had more experience (meaning he actually had some), but nobody was voting for or against him, so that didn't matter. On the other side, people weren't voting for McCain, they were voting against Obama, just like Titan said earlier.

Whoa...why did you wait to go off on me?

I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I think term limits should be implemented immediately so our representatives are doing what's best instead of just trying to make just enough people happy so they can keep their power. And the fact that Congress can vote to give itself a raise is ridiculous...let the people decide that.

But...there's always a but...politicians are politicians are politicians are people...and you put most other people in there and it would be very similar. You said "Give them the enough power and they all do the same repulsive and horrid things to us"...that can be said about the human race in general. It's happened repeatedly throughout history, no matter what type of political system or lack thereof was in place. It happens in middle school and high school, hell it even happens in elementary school! Humans are a vicious animal...it's not just politicians.

There are things that need to be changed, 110% there are. But when you mention things like "Its time to dissolve this multi part system that is destroying us and just go for one individual cesspool we can choose from," I have to disagree. There should be more parties, not fewer. If you think things are bad under two parties, just imagine if there's only one to select from, no choice whatsoever. I'm not sure if that's how you meant it.

And yes, these politicians are our representatives and are supposed to be our voice in government, they should most definitely remember that. But they are still elected...they do screw up repeatedly and the people still re-elect them. My point is change has to start with the people, not the politicians. People need to pay more attention to what's going on and do more learning instead of just going with "their party" and listening to what Fox News/MSNBC tell them. You're exactly right that people should take back the power...and knowledge is power! (thank you Schoolhouse Rocks!) There doesn't need to be a revolt or an overthrow of the system, just do your research, know what you're voting for, and if you don't like the guy that's in there, vote for the other guy...and if you don't like any of the guys, run yourself! There needs to be a grassroots, bi-partisan effort to make sure the people in office know things are going to change...some of the big names start losing to little guys and they'll wise up and change their tune, or they'll be next!

Maybe that's what you're saying as well, but it just seems like you're laying all the blame on the politicians. I think the politicians are just a reflection of society itself. If the people buy into the politicians and media pitting everyone against each other (like they are, hook, line, and sinker), there won't be any change...if the people change, the politicians will be forced to change.

Sorry I didnt mean for it to appear that way. I do like how you said it it with much more poise and elegance than I.

Agreed, but he never really factored into the election.

Which I think to a large extent, is his own fault. While no candidate may have been able to overcome the anti-bush sentiment, McCain basically fell on his own sword when he appointed Palin. Who knows what the outcome would've been with Romney or Rudy as his #2.

The only event that will change the status quo in my opinion, is for an Independent to be elected...or at least a member of another party. Americans don't have the courage to stand up to the Two-Party-Machine. What it all boils down to is MONEY. Special Interest Groups, Lobbyists, Huge Corporations that are 'too big' to fail, and on and on. Money Corrupts...it always has, and always will.

Sorry for the rambling post...Just some of my disorganized thoughts on our political process

Anarchy, Hate to say, but the term civil war comes to mind. Everyone has to be right. No order in the class room, no discipline on the bus, No respect for ones property. No control of the government., no compassion for the poor, no self respect to freeload. We sure came a far way to arrive to square one.

It really doesn't terribly matter who is in office, the government doesn't completely even run the country.

indeed, hit the nail on the head, interest groups, lobbyists, heads of corperations and all like that should be banned. They have no place in trying to influence daily government workings
