DaveS , check my nickname , signature , banner or every trades i do : it's all to get my PC bigger ! When it's not , i'm just trading a card for better tradebait so i can end up trading this one for some Brodeurs.

Many guys around here can let you know how much i traded in their favor for some trades. I often traded some star-player GU or star players RC's (Crosby , Ovie , Stamkos ) for a bunch of Brodeur inserts and base cards.

But in the end , i don't mind doing it because i only collect Brodeur and i can't even think about selling this huge collection

Good thread and solid points that I myself and griped about over the years.

I guess I am one of the few "outcasts" then.

Bring me the Rob Blake/Forsberg/Kopitar/Kings cards I want and you can have all my high end cards of Crosby/Roy/Gretz/etc. I'll even trade Cup cards of those dudes for older, tough to find cards on my wantlist.

I know exactly what you mean, it can be tough, just gotta keep your eyes open, for me, seeing as that I dont have alot of traders, I have to look to make more pc oriented trades rather than things that catch my eye, this way, I can have quality in my colletion, in my eyes, despite small quantities. That said, people put an unneccessary premium on regular game used pieces of guys like OV or crosby, or other big HOFers. For example, a guy offering me two OV game used cards for my Kouvy patch and a Stamkos auto, just because they had similar book values,l not because his cards were great, but solely on the fact they were Ovechkin, I understand poeple think OV or Crosby and think jackpot, but for guys that are really trying to collect them as a pc player such as me, and not as a cash crop, which other people try to do, idk that really bugs me

this rant makes half sense. i can understand where it makes no sense when some people only ask for those top tier players in return for even the smallest items and values just aren't comparable but what about:

    1. the dude who actually collects those guys?

    2. let's face it, those ARE the top tier guys. Lundqvist is my main PC but if i'm moving a decent sized card and the guy doesn't have lundqvist available, i'm not going to have much of a problem adding an Ovechkin, Crosby, or Gretzky to my side PC. at worst, they're in high demand and liquid enough that i can move them to further my Lundqvist PC later on.

I rip a decent amount of wax. Usually 4-8 boxes a month. Most boxes I rip to get traders for the cards I want because most of the times the cards I want are not available in wax. I collect hall of famers particularly from the late 60's or early 70's because that Is when I started watching the game. I have fond memories of those days-watching Bobby Orr and Ken Dryden at a game at Boston Gardens for example. Except for a few products (Parkhurst 06-07, Masterpieces-08-09, and ITG 1972) I will not find the players I collect in modern packs. I do not have the resources to buy box upon box of ITG ultimate looking ofr vontage stuff.

I cannot describe the joy I feel when I find a card such as a Danny Grant auto, yes I said Danny Grant. I think wow here is a guy that gets no recognition but was a great player when I grew up watching hockey. That said, do I want to trade my Crosby sott for a Danny Grant auto? No! But I might trade it for say a collection or set of lesser known player autos, or an auto from a hof legend.

I have nothing against Ovy, Crosby, Toews, Kane, Price collectors because I know they would be interested in any high end I pull. For my PC I would prefer a Maurice Richard, Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr auto. Those are my high end cards.

However, I have noticed that when I want to trade my modern cards, some traders do make ridiculous offers. In one case I wanted a cheevers auto jersey, not numbered and the other person wanted a crosby auto. Just because I collect vintage players does not mean I am stupid.

I am lucky, I get to break a lot of wax and if an offer is not good I will simply wait and accumulate more trade bait.

Hmmmmmm...I wonder where I am going to find my next Bill Barber auto????

I totally agree with you... however, I know that sometimes younger collectors go with what's hot. For example, most of my students collect either Kobe or Lebron, because they're the biggest names in basketball. LOL, I know we're talking hockey, but unfortunately most of students collect basketball.

I like how I sometimes pull a card of say a low end all star and peolpe say that it wasn't a great pull. sure the guy isn't lebron,or crosby or such but to get an all star auto or jersey and have other people say he's a nobody really upsets me. in football there's 50+ players on a team times 32 teams and thats 1600 players in the nfl. tp make a probowl is pretty impressive. but unless it's manning or brady the guy is useless. i checked out a break earlier in the basketball boards and the person got an auto of a second year player who went to the allstar game last year and other people said it wasn't that special.the guy is only a second year player. i remember as a kid watching anyone who had remote talent and thought god it must be good to be that guy,and was once told even the worst player on the worst team is better than 99% of us.

    Once again...Amen.

The NHL is made up of so many different kinds of players, why do it all have to be about Crosby, Ovechkin and Company... There's many different components that make up a Stanley Cup Champion.

I got a hypothetical situation for everyone...

I collect Patrice Bergeron. He's lost just about as much hobby love as one can lose. Injuries can be to blame, and some people believe its down for good. TSN and The Sporting News have him as one of the top sleepers in the NHL this year, and could surprise a lot of people and get back on track... So what if he scores 80-90 points this year, Boston wins the east, goes on to win the cup... He wins the Conn Smythe trophy... A lot of people call that highly unlikely, maybe so do I, but if it happens, does his Value go back up? I say probably not... If it does, it'll be minimal...

I still can't believe there are Crosby Rookie cards booked higher than a Gretzky Rookie... But that's just me...lol

Yeah, but that's not a fair comparison at all. How much would a Gretzky RC book for if it were a Patch / AU #ed /99 ??
