I bust a lot of boxes normally and have been blessed with regular PC pulls I must admit but my main reason to bust is to get good trade bait, I often convert my auto and GU pulls in Roy or Brodeur inserts or base. As I only collect these two, I tend to only trade for them but I can trade down a lot if someone has something on my wantlist.

As for a lot of people wanting the top stars it is true but I do find that a lot of them will be flexible and work with you if you are after lower end stuff you need for your collection, especially if you keep them in mind for when you do have something that's on their wantlist.

Sorry, but I must disagree. The value of a Gretzky rookie is that there is only one true rookie card (2 if you count OPC and Topps versions).

Also, the quality control of a 79-80 opc card was truly horrible. They have multiple problems including deckled edges, miscuts, centering, as well as soft edges and corners. For these reasons it is very difficult to find a Gretzky rookie in great shape.

There is another reason. Many people collect cards now and since the late 80's these cards have gone straight into plastic sleeves and toploaders. This was not the case in 79-80.

In short, Gretzky rookies or for that matter, lemieux, Dryden, Orr, will always be rare because the cards were not made as well as they are today and because peoples' reasons for collecting are different today.

I would much rather have an orginal true rookie than one which has a sug and a patch because the plain rookie signals the earlier raison d'etre of collecting.

Yeah, but that's not a fair comparison at all. How much would a Gretzky RC book for if it were a Patch / AU #ed /99 ??

    I think you misunderstand me.

Because of the nature of 1970s or early 1980s cards.... yes, they are very hard to find in nice condition. A Gretzky that's been graded 10 will outsell any Crosby RC, I know this.

Obviously there will always be less Gretzky RCs on the market than Crosby.... but I don't think the original post was comparing the values of Victory, MVP, Upper Deck, or Black Diamond. There are some RCs (The Cup, for example)

I was commenting on why Crosby RCs have a higher book value than Gretzky. Simply put..... Gretzky's OPC RC can't touch today's super short printed Patch / Auto / RCs..... of the current crop of Super Stars.

Trying to pick what the better card is between a Gretzky OPC RC and a Crosby Cup RC is like asking "who was the better player.... Gretzky or Howe?"

You can't answer the question. They both played hockey, and were both the best players of their time..... but that's it. The game was too different, so how do you fairly compare?

Hockey cards of today are so different from 30 years ago.... that other than the fact that they're still Hockey Cards, you can't really compare them.

I know what you're saying... SP's, Patches etc.. raises the prices... But I guess I just look at it as a history of the game... I don't like Patch Rookies, I don't like SP Rookies, (even tho most 80's and before rookies are SP's now). The Rookie card should be based on what you've done for the game, and not what cards the beckett boys have in their collection. Which is why I NEVER and I mean NEVER look at Book Value when I'm trading... The True Value of a card is put on by the owner, not by a 3rd party company.

I got back into the hobby a few years ago. I didn't know what to collect and started buying a box of everything. After building a few sets of various hockey I went to my first large card show and was amazed at all the cards for sale.

Last year i took some time and with some help with SCF I looked at other peoples collections and took time to think about what i really wanted to collect.

Last year I decided to build my shrine to my favorite hockey team (The Leafs). I have grown up watching them since 92-93 and have great memories of some of various leafs. I also admire the rich history of the team. I decided to collect anything leafs.

Now when I try to collect for things like a Tie Domi g/u valued at $3 and Mr. collector snubs me because i won't trade my malkin auto or ovie gu it bugs me.

I hear what your saying and i agree 100%.

AND, conversely, I just hate it when someone PM's me and tells me they like my Stamkos Ice/99 and which player's I would want in return for it (when I've never even offered it up for trade). Did you read what I said ?...PLAYER'S as in PLURAL !!! as if I would trade the card for multiple's...it sickens me, nobody seems to have a grip on reality anymore.

All that is, people will go through your bucket and pick out the highest BV card and say that's their interest. That's what pisses me off the most. I want a 10 dollar card, and they pick out a 100 dollar card. C'mon... Some people...
