Have any of you tried Trader Joes 2009 holiday brew? I normally love dark beer but skip this one. I think they put nutmeg or some other obscure seasonings in it and the beer part can hardly be tasted.

Regardless, what do you guys like?

i really like to try beers from local breweries wherever i go and have found a couple i really like. First is any of the line of Mad Anthonys here in NE Indiana.... They have a blonde beer that is wonderful. My favorite local beer (WarBird) shut their doors earlier this year.

On another note though... i rarely drink anything but beer but there is a sweet tea vodka called firefly that comes from the carolinas that is awesome.... i highly recommend at least giving it a shot. Mix it 3/4 firefly 1/4 lemonade and it is a great summer drink.

I'm generally partial to vodka + anything, along with porter/stout ales.

For the holidays, though, eggnog and brandy is the best. I can still taste the kind I had last year, and will be having it again.

Whiskey, dark beer, and tequila, in that order.

Whiskey: Jack is my #1, also like Crown, Wild Turkey, Jim, and Elijah Craig is a very good cheap whiskey.

Beer: The best beer I've ever had I haven't been able to find the last couple of times I was there...South End Brewery (Charleston, Charlotte) Oatmeal Porter. Absolutely fantastic, but like I said, they didn't have it the last couple of times I went. On a regular basis, Fat Tire, Newcastle, Bass, Yeungling Black and Tan, Sam Adams, Long Trail Ale, and PBR is by far the best cheap beer.

If you like porters/stouts, try Kona Pipeline Porter. An amazingly smooth porter with strong coffee notes. It's in my top 3 all time. Just tried it last week.

I have heard it is made in small batches and pricey.

I am fortunate enough to live in the mecca of microbrews - Oregon. My personal favorite is Rogue Brewery out of Newport (Oregon coast). For those preferring the lighter shades, they make a great pale called Yellow Snow. Dead Guy amber is amazing. My all time favorite beer though is Shakespeare Stout. As an added bonus, all of their beer comes in 22 oz bottles. Good stuff.
