Jason Blake is gone as part of the Giggy deal. He wasn't scoring but he works his butt off.

phaneuf is the perfect guy for burke - he like tough players (some would call dirty) and phaneuf is just that. burke also gets a decent return for guys that are probably leaving anyway as stajan is UFA, Mayers is UFA and White is RFA.
good deal for both teams i think - calgary gets what they need in some scoring (hagman has been TOR's best player recently) and they get white to take phaneuf's minutes. burke gets a quality d-man for 3 guys he was losing anyway.

As a Flames fan I'm satisfied, although Kadri would have been nice and losing Aulie hurts... Phaneuf has been terrible the last 2+ years. Little offense, a HUGE defensive liability, terrible in the dressing room, terrible with the fans, and at a cost of 6.5 million. I'm happy with this salary dump and have been waiting for it for a few years now. Thank you Darryl.

Calagry cleaned out some Cap Space, next to go Jokinen, They are the leaders to get Kovalchuk, and I hope they do, oh yeah, Phaneuf is over rated, not really doing much for the Flames these days.

no way calgary gets kovy - they don't have anything left to offer for him. boston, chicago and LA can all offer better packages now that phaneuf is gone.

The thing is Calgary could possibly sign him in the summer with the cap room now because he is most likely going to be a rental, or at least have room to make other acquisitions. Sutter said he won't trade for a high caliber upcoming UFA (referring to Kovalchuk)
Like it was said before, hopefully Olli is the next to go. Another $5 million waste of a first rounder.

i totally agree they can make a run at IK this summer. frankly i don't think he'll go to Cgy but they definitely have the space now to make a run at him.
i just don't think they have any pieces left to trade for IK - but i guess if Sutter said he wasn't going to anyway then it doesn't matter.
btw, i don't think this was a bad deal for CGY. they move out phaneuf who wasn't totally happy and frankly is overpaid for what they were getting from him.
they get white to take some of those minutes as they already have bouwmeester to anchor their d and now maybe he'll step up with phaneuf gone.
they get some secondary scoring for this year and hagman has a decent contract to play wing on their 2nd line in the coming years.
if i'm a CGY fan i have to ask the question who is going to center the first line next year. they need a guy to play with iginla and jokinen is not the answer.

BTW - What happen to Jokinen??? He was a stud on Florida - in the top 20 in scoring....he goes to Calgary with a top 10 scorer in Iginla and sucks it up.....

bad fit i guess - i don't know. iginla needs more of a playmaker. they should have re-signed cammalleri as they worked well together.
