that's right - i knew there were 2 UFA's and 1 RFA. so stajan and mayers were UFA's, white was RFA and hagman was at $3M.

contract wise he traded blake and hagman for phaneuf. that's still a good trade.

i think white will be a good player but he was having a career year and is probably a good thing to get value for him.

burke moved blake, toskala and mayers (overpaid/underproducing/disgruntled in some cases) for phaneuf and the hope of a #1 goalie if giguere can return to form. i don't know much about the prospect they got but it sounds like he's a good player.

they don't get better this year but they should be much better next year.

i agree that hagman is a 20 goal guy but he's having a career year this year. he's not a top line guy is what i'm saying. on a good team he's a 2nd liner. his contact is ok and he'll score some goals in calgary. he may get 30 goals this year but i don't think he'll do it again.

The moves Burke just made were not made for next year. He expects a run at the playoffs THIS year, which will not happen. And we will give you Froloaf, Purcell, and Jones for practically nothing. They all are atrocious NHLers

I doubt this also....They are in last place in the East and 11 pts away from 8th....They may move up but you can bet the farm they will not get in the playoffs....

LOL - and calling Fro, Purcy and Jones atrocious NHLers will not make it easy to trade them away......I can see Frolov going somewhere very soon but I dont think the Leafs have anything DL wants.....

The Draft is in LA so I would think DL would keep all his picks and maybe even pick up a few....I would also guess he will make a splash on draft day....

Toronto made a couple trades to help them in the Future....Jiggy will help the Monster but will not help win games....Getting Phaneuf was the best thing Toronto could do....Maybe he can teach Schenn to be a real force in the NHL. Now all they need is scoring -

wow i didn't even know about these deals, phaneuf is definitely a big pickup, losing white is huge though and losing the 3 forwards i see what the leafs want to do, they are gonna go young and leaf bozak up, they got stalberg, probably recall hanson, and they got kadri to come in next year which they were gonna have to make room anyways, don't know if giguere is the answer in toronto but toskala wasn't being re-signed anyways and blake has been a bust since coming to toronto, if TO can play better D maybe giguere can find his way, i guess time will tell

btw, i really like the future of toronto's blue line. i'm not sure if they can keep everyone, but that's a very good top 6.

    kaberle/phaneuf/schenn/beauchemin/finger/komisarek

i imagine exelby is gone (for a mid-round pick?) and i doubt kaberle re-signs but they have gunnarsson to take a spot if they want to move kaberle. i guess he's the one guy that they still have (kaberle) that they can get some value for.

btw, blake/hagman/toskala were making $11M between them. he can pay for phaneuf with that and then some.

too bad he has those bad contracts with finger and komisarek.

Exelby and a pick to La for Purcell? We'd have a ton of dmen but it gets rid of Purcell, who is useless in our system, and gets us a GOOD 6th defenceman.

i'd trade purcell just for the pick - frankly, i think LA is ok on the blue line. with everyone healthy i like our 6. doughty/johnson/scuderi/drewiske/greene/o'donnell. i don't see anywhere to play exelby as i don't think he's better than any of our guys.

I dont see DL trading a forward for a Dman with 3-4 really good prospects waiting for a Dman spot....especially since he is playing 7 D-men (Harrold as forward)......
I would say Exelby is better than OD...OD is done...people at Staples are calling him SLOWdonnell, OLDonnell - He is losing his toughness and his solid D....He lost the Kings at least 2 games all by himself....one was against Detroit with 17 sec...he pinned a guy against the boards, The Wing got out and free path to Quick....OD has also made bad passes that have resulted in a goal....Otherwise I am good with the D they have now....
Someone please take Ivanans for a couple of Practice pucks......

i think OD's game is slipping as well but i don't think it's worth screwing with team chemistry right now. OD is a leader in the locker room and trading him could be disasterous. play him in the 3rd pair and give him a few nights off now that everyone is back.

the upgrade of OD to exelby is not worth the damage it could do.

i agree about the d-man situation in general though - if DL makes any moves it should be for a scoring forward to replace williams' scoring. a top 6 winger would put people back where they need to be (richardson to 3rd line/parse to 4th/etc.)
