Not just in card show, some people overpay stuff in ebay also. I have seen card in ebay selling more in auction while there is BIN with cheaper price.
And some Lebron worths more than Melo GU. There are way too many Melo GU that can be bought for $5.

Funny you say this i was checking an auction on a rare jamal Mashburn auto on the bay it auctioned for $28 + shipping , i was searching bins last night and picked up another copy for $15 +$2 Shipping and the auction ended on the first one 2 days ago

Also a big factor is a lot of collectors have the " i Gotta have it mentality " and bid cards out of proportion a card might be worth only $250 but when you have two collectors with the gotta have it mentality it can sell for double that but the next three auctions sell for under the $250 mark so like i said Ebay has to many variables .

There are variables, but there are variables with everything that sells. If you see one go for $500 and three others go for under $250, the value is clearly under $250 and the $500 auction was an outlier.

Well i think Beckett already outlines a $250 - $500 would you not say that covers all the high and low actions ? Basically covers that the card is sold between these indicators quite clear obviously they would not update it every edition (magazine ) there are over 100000 listings and i would not want to think what it would take to update to the exact decimal point of the last few months sales for every single card they list and document ( the magazine cost would quadruple due to the cost to keep the data entry at a month per month basis ).

Overall people exploit sales on the bay to gain what they require either at a selling or a buying point where beckett will give you a hi lo basis to work with.
I am sure we all have been shown the lowest sales ( links of past sales ) of cards when an experiance collector is trying to buy off you and on the flip side the seller will try and show you the highest sale of the card they are trying to sell, i guess if you are experianced enough you will know what the card has been selling for over last few months and make an informed decisions.
