    Well, different philosophies, I guess.

When you're a virtual lock for the lottery, likely top 5.... and maybe #1 again, I don't think you should ever trade your first round pick. Even if you get a legit star for it.... it may not work out so well. Ask Toronto. (I don't think many people picked them to finish last in the East - but you were drinking too much of Burke's Koolaid if you thought they ever had a chance to make the playoffs).

Pickard looks like he's going to be a good one. I don't imagine he'll still be available at 31 (someone will take him). Honestly, I'd rather the Oilers pass on him anyway. If you're not going to take a goalie with a top 5 pick (and there are very few of them) take them in the mid rounds (was very happy with the Olivier Roy selection last year). They're sooooooo hit or miss, and you don't really know for a couple of years..... I'd rather go with the high impact forwards & defenseman in the first couple of rounds.

If they can announce Kirill Kabanov with the 31st pick (That's where he's 'ranked' now) I will take back a lot of the bad things I've said about management over the last few years.

Yes you do. If it were for Price, I'd do it in next years draft.

OR what the Oilers would be smart to do would be draft calvin Pickard with the 1st pick in the 2nd round or trade in to the 1st again to get him. The kid will be pretty darn good, just like his brother

OUCH! I don't think the LEAF Nation was expecting Playoffs this year with the team we knew we had.

It's funny how everyone specualte on where Carey Price will go. I guess many just dream to see him join their team.

To me, I think many over react to a good period halak is having. That does not mean he will goal like this all the time. Remember who was in the habs goal when they won against Boston after loosing 3 -1 in the match, Josee theodore. Is he such a great goaler?

Halak had a better seaon the Carey Price but he is also 2 years older. Some seem to forget that goaltender reach their peek between 24-26 years of age. SO halak is there but Carey Price still have two more year to reach this point. I still think Carey Price, in the long run will be a better goaler.

Was halak better two years ago then Carey is today. I would say no. Will Carey be a better goaler then he his now in 2 years, I think so.

Richard has vowed not to discuss the goaltender situation in Montreal until the end of the playoffs, banned us from talking about it in the GDT yesterday...Now respect his wishes lol

No..... and maybe I was taking too much of a swipe at them.

Burke was very loud about the idea that they'd compete for the playoffs (not that they'd necessarily make it). I thought that was a big stretch too.

As for the Kessel trade.... I would take Phil Kessel over Luke Schenn + Nazim Kadri any day of the week. The talent is rarer, and will have much more positive impact on the team longer term. (I use them, becuase they were the previous two #1 picks by Toronto).

If both of the draft picks fell outside the top 5, Toronto got a good deal. The problem is that it backfired a bit - as I think the #2 pick will be a player that I wouldn't have traded 1-for-1 to get Kessel.... much less give up another 1st rounder along with it.

    Yes, Yes, and Yes.

I would very much like him on my team (Price). I think he will still turn out to be a very good goalie.

This is the problem though..... can they keep both? I think both of them have played well enough to earn much more money than they're making now. If you can get both to resign, and they're spending no more than 6 million per-season on the two of them; keep both.

I just have a hard time beleiving that will happen.... and when you combine the fact that Halak has been brilliant these playoffs, plus Price's #1 supporter (Gainey) has left the organization - I think Price will be the one dealt.

Anyway - I wanted to clarify my point, and now I'll stop talking about the topic, as per Rich's wishes :)

Burkie is pretty loud about everything. Part of the reason I like him so much.

Is it really such a bad thing to say we'd be competing for a playoff spot? Isn't that what teams are supposed to do? Try to be competitive? There was never going to be a tank in Toronto. Even though I feel it would have been the best option.

Honestly it was funny this season. Last year we could score plenty of goals, put couldn't keep the puck out of the net. So we upgrade our defense, let Toskala get surgery, bring in a young and seemingly talented backup. On paper we should have been much more competitive than we were.

I didn't like the Kessel trade to start with. Honestly I'm not a huge fan of Kessel anyways. He's obviously skilled, and I don't mind having him on the team; he's just not my kind of player. He's a complimentary player, and honestly we gave too much to get him.

The sour taste goes away a bit with the Phaneuf trade though. That may have been the best trade we've made in years. Sjostrom was effective for us on the PK, and as an energy guy, Aulie looks to be a strong defensive prospect, and Dion has emerged as a leader we needed. The only piece in that trade I miss is Ian White.

What bothers me here is that assuming Burke can build a contender...I have a feeling we won't be looking at more than three or four competitive seasons before we start sinking again. The salary cap is going to be our enemy without an influx of young, cheap talent that can play big roles on the team.

Obviously he had to say it publicly (they'll challenge for a spot) but that doesn't mean he has make trades as if he really believes it.

I would never suggest he knowingly has a 29th place team. He didn't see this coming, otherwise he'd never make the trade. Poor judge of what he had; likely fell too much in love with some of his moves.

The Phaneuf deal? I have said repeatedly that I think he's an exceptionally overrated defenseman. He's not nearly as good as people make him out to be. I also think Burke ROBBED Calgary on that deal. A+ move.

Burke is a good GM, IMO.... but has done nothing ever to prove he's a great one. In Vancouver he found limited success, and left the team in a mess when he was gone.

In Anahime - he took an established team, signed Scott Neidermayer, and traded for Chris Pronger. Neither of those are exactly brilliant moves. Great moves? Yes. I'm sure every arm-chair GM out there would have made the same ones though.

They win a Cup, he rides it out for a couple of years, and leaves as the team is becoming a mess.

One thing I'll really give him credit for though - the College & Europe signings. He's getting assets for nothing. Very smart moves.
