    Smile New collector here...

    Hi all,

I am a brand new member of this board and just wanted to say hey. Had a collection going on years ago and now started back up.

Currently toying with ideas of who to collect as my favourite players are John LeClair, Simon Gagne, Scottie Upshall and Matt Duchene (yes I am a Flyers fan). Am just enjoying browsing the many designs available at the moment, but recently picked up a few random cards in the last couple of days.

Anyone have any tips / hints of the collection process, general concept of the best way to store your cards etc? Would be much appreciated. :)

Also, any idea on how much this card of Tyler Myers is worth? Beautiful looking card, but cannot find it on Beckett.

Welcome aboard! To answer your questions: Best way to store cards is 1) cheap route: Penny sleeve, toploader, teambag 2) slightly more expensive: Magnetic one-touch holders 3) super-expensive: getting the card slabbed and graded by a professional grader (ie. like that Myers link you're showing). Asking for BV is forbidden in the forums. That Tyler Myers H&P base card does show on Beckett. It's worth half-a-pound minus 10 pence - if you can figure that out. As for tips, if you have specific players in mind already, I suggest spending the money on those players as opening boxes these days are very hit-and-miss if you're looking for specific players. Monetary budget is always a primary concern, so figure out your budget first and go from there. Good luck.

Oh, sorry, I didn't realise it was forbidden! Sorry!!

Yeah, I haven't seen a website over here in the UK that sells boxes, so I'd have to add shipping on top, and that can work out even more expensive. I am looking at buying individual cards for now but as I have a few favourite players, wittling it down to one could be difficult as my budget isn't as much as the avid collector here.

I mean, collecting Upshall would probably be cheaper than the other three I mentioned as he's probably less sought after.

    Thanks for the tips!!

You'd be surprised, there is a high chance you can get LeClair and Gagne super cheap as they are not on everyone's radar right now. Duchene though is a different story, especially if he wins the Calder in june, but he's still very cheap compared to the big guns. Plus, he doesn't have a lot of cards out right now which is a bonus. Good luck.

Cannot seem to find that Myers card on Beckett for some reason…

That's true. There's also the fact that Upshall probably has less cards than LeClair and Gagne!

Welcome to SCF! The Myers is just a base card, not really worth much

As for the advice collecting, make a decision on some players you really like, and can see yourself collecting no matter what

Nice. I just picked up a 2008-09 Gagne Dual Authentic Fabric for under $2, albeit, it's probably not worth much more than that, but I LOVE fabric/game used stuff.

Also picked up a 2001-02 Parkhurst Mark Recchi Game Used 2 Colour Stick for $5 and a 2009-10 ITG BTP Fleury Silver for $6.

Cannot get enough of game used cards!
