So going for, say, five boxes of UD Series 2 at 80 a pop rather than an Ultimate Collection box would be a more prudent move?

If you're already thinking high-end then stick with high-end. In my opinion, you'd be setting yourself up for disappointment with 5 boxes of Series 2 (what year?). If the Series 2 you're referring to is 05-06, then the only important hit is the Ovy YG. For $80, you can easily buy one. For $400, you can have 5. What are the chances of you hitting an Ovy YG on every box? Pretty close to nil.

Almost forgot. If you're really itching to bust wax, then I suggest some of the newer ones like 09-10 or 08-09 years as their prices are more in tune with today's market. You'll get better value from a box breaking point of view.

Thanks, Oz. Enlightening details, for sure. I noticed that I did well with the 08-09 product, and have done okay with 09-10. I guess the allure of landing a big-time Sid or Ovy in a pack got me thinking...but you're all right, it would be better to just eliminate the risk and buy one directly from eBay.

    Thanks again!!!

unless you want to open 05-06 the cup.

you probably are better off busting 4 cases of that and re-selling the hits than just buying the Crosby at $12k

Someone told me 05-06 Cup was a MAJOR hit-or-miss.

Go for it. You may not get Crosby or Ovechkin but that Rookie crop would make up for it. Lundqvist, Richards, Carter, Getzlaf...I can go on and on!

i bought a single box of 05-06 the cup a few months ago
    I pulled
    Base Alfredsson (sold $10)
    Base Sundin (sold $10)
    Cheevers/Brodeur Dual Patch (sold $90)
Barry Tallackson Auto Patch RC (FS still)
Jimmy Howard Auto Patch RC (PC)
Roberto Luongo Signature Patch Auto (FS still)

I paid $500 for the box.

The Howard probably has a realized value of $150 (its a nice patch)
and the Luongo probably has a realized value of $50 (panthers patch hurts it)
    and the Tallackson probably $15
so in total thats about $235 realized on a $500 purchase.

Not bad overall but still hit or miss

Once again, those cards SV are $40 or less. You can buy all those guys for less than $400 total.
