Say, for example, you have a Hot Prospects Auto/Patch RC of Tuukka Rask, which books at $80. As of right now, he's not getting as much hobby love as Jaroslav Halak, whose Hot Prospects Auto/Patch RC books at $120, but that's mainly because of the Habs' run in the playoffs. They're the same quality of card numbered out of the same thing from the same set. At the end of the day, if I think that Rask is going to be the better player down the line, I'd rather have his HP Auto Patch than Halak's, despite the fact that Halak's is worth more right now.

Maybe I think more long-term about this than most people? I don't know

EDIT: I realized that I was talking about book value here but Halak's cards are worth more in cash value right now as well

Sticking with the stock analogy, I guess what I'm trying to say is, I try not to sell/trade my cards when they're at their low point and trade for/buy cards when they're at their high point.

I was trying to sell a Byfuglien Young Gun for months for $1 on eBay and didn't get any bites, so I waited a while and kept it stashed away. When he broke out in the playoffs, I put it up immediately and it ended up selling for $5.

Well that is fine. Sometimes you get that lucky. But when you trade, you can't sit there and say, "Well I want a little more because he MAY do better" That just won't work.

If I had a Drew Doughty card worth $200 cash value and I was offered a Bobby Orr card worth $200 cash value, I'd probably stick with the Doughty. Chances are, not only is the Doughty card a nicer piece in comparison (ex. Patch/AU vs. AU), but it'll also likely be worth more down the line, whereas most Hall of Fame guys won't ever gain in value. I probably wouldn't ask for more, I just wouldn't do the deal. I think that's a pretty fair way of doing things. If I can't come to terms with someone, I don't get sore about it, I just move on. Unless it's a 1/1, there's likely another way to get that card down the line at the price/value I want in a deal that will make both parties happy. I think, in a good trade, both people feel like they win the deal. Those are the trades I try to work out.

That is fine, again haha. You have every right to refuse a trade. But the problem is when people tell me, "My card will go up, so I won't trade it for that, but give me that CRosby (which has more value), than I will do it."

If you won't trade because of that, than no problem. It is when there are two $150 in question, and one guy wants $200 because he thinks his card will go up. How is that fair?

Haelwho2 - This actually has nothing to do with our trade discussions that wernt meant to be. When I talked to you about how I couldnt do the proposed deal because cash values were too off for me, you didnt get all snickery about it or tell me im crazy for asking for cash values .... it was actually quite refreshing. Two people who just didnt see a way to trade at the time and moved on with no hard feelings or anything like that.

You dont know how many people have tried to trade for my Ward SPA FW Auto Patch /100 at 100BV, and then have given me some rude response because I was asking for the cash value of the card in trade ( which is roughly $90 - $100 )
