Thanks, whats odd here is that a field umpire made the hit by pitch judgment call in the end, seems a little far from the plate to be making that call.

You do hate to overturn a call normally unless you are positive the guy got it wrong.
I have had to ask for help before on a foul ball off the batters foot that rolled fair, I was shielded pretty good by the catcher jumping up to make a throw on the R1 attempting the steal of second. So it does happen and for the most part these guys want to get the calls right.Hidden Content

It sucked that that happened but overturning the call would have been a mistake. The managers are hard to deal with to begin and giving them that inch would have caused a ton more issues down the road. I have seen it first hand.

But i dont think the Indians would have been angry with the overturned call that resulted in a Perfect Game when it was obvious.

No they wouldn't have. But it does open the door for other managers to be "snakes" as they are usually called in umpiring circles anytime a call didn't go there way.

I agree 100% and they do a good job for the most part. As far as the HBP call here is conerned, it looks like they got it right. Thanks for the insight.

I have a lot of respect for MLB umpires and I think they do the best job of officiating out of all the pro sports.

Also, I remeber hearing somewhere that a call can only be overturned before the next batter steps into the batters box. Once the next batter is in the batters box, nothing can be overturned. I couldnt find anything about that in my mlb rule book. Is this true?

Pretty much, however the manager can protest a call if he thinks it is in violation of the rule (not a judgment call). But to appeal a call like if you think the runner missed a base or something it has to be before the next pitch is thrown.
