I agree with the sentiment here.

I don't think player collectors have any sort of right to a card over someone else - no matter how much they want it, or consider it their 'whale'.

First off - If you're collecting "Player X" there is likely someone else out there doing it too. Who decides which collector gets the card? Who does that Rookie Shield mean more to? Collector 'A' or 'B' ??

Second off - Just becuase someone collects something other than a specific player - who is anyone to say how much that card means to them? If someone wants to get all the Rookie Shields ever made, good for them. Good luck.

As Barrie has nicely put it - Detach and relax. Just becuase us self proclaimed player collectors are active in searching for cards we need online, does not mean that someone holding the cards we're looking for is even under the slightest obligation to let us have them, no matter what reason they want to hold them.

    Word up Sean!

Just to let you all now I practice what I preach, about a month ago a HUGE whale of mine showed up, a Rob Blake card I have been trying to grab for over 5 years.

I saw one copy previously and it was gone to a fellow player collector/friend, who I didn't want to get in a bidding war with so I deferred to him as it had his guy on it as well.

Well karma brought me another chance, albeit 5 years later, and I put my bid in.

I was honestly SHOCKED to see I lost the card last minute as I put in a sizable amount, more than I was going to originally.

That said, I realized I had just lost about $75 OVER what my max was supposed to be and let it go. I mean hey, the guy outbid me fair and square right?

I haven't looked back since and have picked up plenty more sweet cards since then.

There is always something to chase, one or two cards don't define your collection and definitely shouldn't ruin your fun.

For the record, the Mueller Shield will be staying in his collection. If it ever becomes available, I'll take a run at it and I'm sure I won't be the only one.

There's still plenty more work to do in this hobby.

Crazy how this thread seemed to agitate folks when only 1 person had anything negative to say and in his case it was actually hypothetical!

It's a free market guys. We all collect what we want to collect. And when you see this kind of card available, and you REALLY want it, so JUMP on it (not the time to bargain) before someone else purchase the card.

By the way, what is this hype this year around Shields? Because UD released less cards featuring NHL Shields than past years, now people want more Shields!?

there's always hype for the shield cards. the surprising lack of any shield pulls has more people concerned that the checklist is altered or the production runs inflated. nobody wants to waste their money on product with no hits.

I dont know why people hate on people that have alot of money and can afford to collect things like Shields, Cup /99 RCs and stuff like that, especially people like Lee and Stephen.

In 07/08 my Jonathan Bernier Ultimate Shield appeared on ebay. I knew collectors like Lee and Stephen could easily blow me out of the water on this card, and we kept in touch during the auction. I had asked them to please stay out of the auction to give me a better chance at winning it.

Come auctions end ..... I had won the card .... most likey because they big boys in the hobby were nice enough to help out a collector not on the same level as them in this hobby.

To date, this has been the only interaction ive had with the big collectors in the hobby .... and will be forever grateful that they let me have the Bernier for my personal collection!

    And here she is!

I am clearly outnumbered here, I guess I'll be quiet even though I am not knocking Lee, just trying to make a point, that's all. No need for everyone to get riled.

    BTW, sweet Bernier shield!

That's awesome. Craig and I actually had the same deal last week when I ended up picking up a huge PC item yet to be unnamed.
