First of all, Welcome to SCF. I love this forum it is the best place on the web to trade and there is a lot of great people on this site.
As far as hot products, UD Series 1 is always huge and this year a lot of people seem to really like Ultimate Collection, as they've been able to get there moneys worth. SP Authentic is also really popular.
A good way to start, in my opinion, would be to buy a couple boxes and get some traders. It may take you awhile, but you'll slowly be able to trade up and be able to get nicer and nicer cards. There are tons of people on here who will help you and I have definitely seen a lot of MAF.
Welcome back to the hobby!

welcome aboard.... IMO the best way to start out would be buying a few singles....do a little research of whats hot...(toews, patrick kane, tavares, crosby, ovechkin are the usual guys people clammer over) busting wax can be a fun way to get traders (but is the more expensive route vs. buying singles) and try and have fun with the experience and good luck on the boards

I would suggest doing a bit of research on eBay or Google. The big names are really pretty much:
Crosby
Ovechkin
Malkin
Kane
Toews
Tavares
Duchene
Stamkos
Brodeur
Gretzky
Orr
Howe
Lemieux
Roy
As for a start, I would suggest buying a few nice singles that you wouldn't mind trading. I would also recommend buying a few boxes that will give you a good bang for your buck. Good examples of these boxes would be Upper Deck 1 (6 RCs and 2 Jerseys per box) and Be A Player (1 Auto in every pack, one multi auto per box. One RC in every box, one parallel, and rookie jersey). UD 1 will run you about $50-$60 and BAP wil be around $70-$90.
Buying Fleury singles would also be a great way to start. Save up some money and buy some REALLY nice cards. Don't buy a bunch of $5 cards with $200, buy two or three REALLY nice cards to get your PC going.
Get familiar with SCF. Try to be as active as possible, get your name out there. Make people know you are a Fleury collector. Get familiar with the acronyms of the hobby:

Find a few people that you can reach out to at any time, for anything. Maybe just to chat or maybe a huge question you have on your future in the hobby. The community of SCF is more than welcome to help you and want to see your collection suceed!
Feel free to ask questions!!!
Also, you may want to check out this thread to see what kind of Fleurys there are, Kendall has just about everything of Fleury minus 1/1s.

Welcome aboard!
I'm new here too, and still trying to figure out whether I really want to dive into card-collecting headlong (yeah, like I need *another* cash-suck hobby) or just live vicariously through you guys. ;-)
If I can put together the scratch for a box or two, I'm thinking about trying to put together some UD Series 1, although SP Authentic's design is really starting to grow on me...

Well, first off welcome aboard. Second, my advice to people that are going to commit to this hobby is to:
1) Prepare a budget plan and do your best to stick to that plan.
2) Based on the player you've chosen, decide what you would like to collect....or simply put what type of cards interest you? There are:
- Normal Base Cards
- Rookie Cards
- Autographed Cards
- Memorabilia Cards (pieces of Jerseys, Jersey Patches, and Sticks for the most part)
- A combination of Autographed and Memorabilia cards together on one card
Out of the list above, there are serial-limited print cards or non-limited print cards. So decide what you would like to collect. If - for example - you like to collect Fleury Auto cards but your budget is say $10/month, then it's better to wait and save up and buy that nice auto card rather than settling for $10 base, inserts, and/or parallel cards.
3) One thing you need to realize is that this hobby is not a race. It's not about collecting more than the other guy/gal. Because someone somewhere will always have more cards than you. So learn to love what you got on-hand, and don't be pressured to go beyond what you're capable of financially.
4) People will rag me on this, but get yourself a price guide. www.beckett.com has an online price guide that is better and cheaper than their newsstand magazine. It is a useful tool for someone new to the hobby or someone getting back to the hobby. The last thing you want to do is overpay for a card that you have no idea what the fair value is.
5) If you've got nothing in the cupboard, stay away from trading until you have a better feel for the community - whether that be online here on forums, card shows, or your local card shop (better known as LCS). So, my suggestion is to not buy packs/boxes/cases. Stick to singles - specifically your favourite player MA-Fleury.
6) And lastly, if you don't know, ASK. There are no stupid questions around here. You can PM me for instance if you need help. I'm not trading as much these days, so I've got time to spare.
Good luck.

Welcome aboard! I am new to this site and collecting hockey cards. I have been buying boxes of a little bit of everything to see what I like. I have also been buying singles when I see something I like. As Mr. Ozzie said above the best thing is to prepare a budget and try to stick to it. It has worked for me thus far.
